Algiers, Algeria | August 21st, 2024 — The Algerian People’s National Army (ANP) continues to demonstrate its commitment to national security, with 14 individuals arrested for supporting terrorist groups in various operations conducted across the country between August 14 and 20, 2024, according to a detailed report released by the ANP today. These efforts exemplify the military’s “high professionalism, vigilance, and constant readiness” in defending the nation against evolving threats.

During a series of coordinated operations across various regions, ANP detachments apprehended 14 suspects involved in providing logistical support to terrorist groups. This demonstrates the military’s strategic efforts to dismantle networks that jeopardize Algeria’s internal security, reinforcing its reputation for excellence in counterterrorism.

In parallel, the ANP has intensified its fight against organized crime, focusing on curbing drug trafficking, a persistent issue in the region. Working in collaboration with other security services, ANP forces arrested 51 drug traffickers in military regions. These actions led to the confiscation of more than 106 kilograms of treated kif (a form of cannabis), smuggled in from Morocco, as well as 40 kilograms and 259 grams of cocaine, and 69,861 psychotropic tablets.

The ANP’s operations extend beyond counterterrorism and drug interdiction. In the southern regions of Tamanrasset, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, and Illizi, 414 individuals were arrested in connection with illegal mining activities. The military also seized 24 vehicles, 71 generators, 37 jackhammers, explosives, gold ore, stones, and other equipment used for unauthorized mining.

The report further highlights a series of operations leading to the detention of 41 individuals involved in various criminal activities, the confiscation of six hunting rifles, four automatic pistols, 4,700 liters of fuel, and over 68.3 tons of food products intended for smuggling.

In maritime operations, the Algerian Coast Guard successfully intercepted several attempts at illegal migration, preventing 106 individuals from crossing the Mediterranean aboard makeshift boats. Additionally, security forces detained 296 undocumented migrants of diverse nationalities across the country, reflecting Algeria’s ongoing efforts to combat human trafficking and illegal migration.

These comprehensive operations underscore the ANP’s pivotal role in safeguarding Algeria’s national security, combating multifaceted organized crime, and ensuring the stability of its borders. Through sustained vigilance, the ANP continues to uphold the rule of law, secure vital resources, and maintain national sovereignty amidst growing regional challenges.
