Algiers- Algeria, May 7, 2024 –  The 15th Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) wrapped up on Sunday in Banjul, Gambia, with the adoption of the Summit’s Final Communique. During the summit held on May 4th and 5th, heads of state and government of the OIC member countries commended Algeria’s steadfast support for the Palestinian cause and expressed their full backing for President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s unwavering efforts.

The leaders recognized Algeria’s significant role in promoting Palestinian unity, particularly through the Unification Conference held in Algiers, which resulted in the “Algiers Declaration” on October 12, 2022. Moreover, they applauded Algeria’s diplomatic efforts at the United Nations Security Council to halt the criminal attacks by the Zionist occupation in Gaza, which led to the adoption of Security Council Resolution 2728 (2024), calling for an immediate ceasefire in the region.

In a resolution issued at the end of the summit, the OIC once again denounced the “genocide” in Gaza and urged its 57 member countries to “impose sanctions” on the Zionist entity. The resolution also called for “immediate, permanent, and unconditional” ceasefire, along with halting the export of weapons and ammunition used by the occupying forces.

The summit highlighted Algeria’s pivotal role in combating terrorism and violent extremism in the African Sahel region. It commended Algeria’s efforts in organizing training workshops for Sahel countries in collaboration with the African Center for the Study and Research on Terrorism, headquartered in Algeria.

President Tebboune’s pioneering role as the Coordinator of the African Union in the prevention and fight against terrorism and violent extremism was also praised. The summit welcomed Tebboune’s initiative to establish a continental civil mechanism for disaster preparedness and response, aimed at providing effective and secure support to African countries affected by disasters.

Moreover, the summit commended Algeria’s hosting of the seventh Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum in March 2024. It praised the outcomes of the summit, which aimed at supporting the common vision of member countries in preserving the interests of gas producers and consumers, particularly in Africa, and their efforts to combat energy poverty.

Additionally, the leaders congratulated Algeria on the inauguration of Djamaâ El-Djazaïr, the third largest mosque in the world, considered a center for spiritual enlightenment and a hub for religious, scientific, cultural, and tourist activities. The Final Communique praised Djamaâ El-Djazaïr for promoting authentic Islamic values of tolerance and moderation and fostering peace, dialogue among civilizations, and international ties.

Furthermore, the summit applauded Algeria’s efforts in promoting peace and tolerance globally, including the adoption of the UN resolution designating May 16 as the International Day of Living Together in Peace. It also celebrated UNESCO’s recognition of “Raï, Algerian Folk Music” as part of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity, adding to Algeria’s rich cultural heritage already listed by UNESCO.

Algeria’s cultural heritage inscribed by UNESCO now includes ten elements, including Ahellil from Gourara, Tlemcen’s bridal costume (La Chedda), “Khit Errouh,” the celebration of “Sboue” at the Sidi El Hadj Belkacem Zawiya in Gourara, the annual pilgrimage to the mausoleum of Sidi Cheikh in El Abiodh, and the Sebeïba ritual and ceremonies.
