ALGIERS- The 17th edition of the international exhibition for automotive after-sales and mobility services, Equip Auto Algeria 2024, is underway at the Palace of Expositions – Pins Maritimes in Algiers (Safex) from yesterday. With a little over 400 exhibitors participating, this edition is notably dominated by Chinese exhibitors, with over 230 present in the China Pavilion.

In addition to the prominent presence of Chinese equipment manufacturers, nearly 30% of the national exhibitors are local spare parts manufacturers or subcontractors. Exhibitors from Turkey, Korea, India, Tunisia, and Taiwan were also present, outnumbering European exhibitors, including Italians, Poles, French, and Germans. The trend towards Chinese exhibitors mirrors the new configuration of the automotive market, where over 80% of approvals granted are for Chinese brands.

This viewpoint is shared by the exhibition organizer, Nabil-Bey Boumezrag, who emphasized that the participation of nearly 240 Chinese exhibitors in this event “is not by chance,” stating that it aims to “accompany the transformation of the automotive market in Algeria.” Chinese operators are seeking Algerian partners, present at the exhibition or visiting, to enter the local distribution and potentially manufacturing sectors. Notably, this automotive aftermarket exhibition will continue until February 29th and is expected to host at least 10,000 professional visitors. The event will also feature debates on the aftermarket market and the automotive industry in Algeria, with panels led by national and international experts.

Spare Parts Market: €1.25 Billion

According to industry specialists interviewed at the After Market Equip Auto Algeria exhibition, the Algerian automotive spare parts market is estimated to be worth nearly €1.25 billion. With a fleet of nearly 7 million vehicles of all categories and an average age exceeding 15 years, demand for spare parts is significant. However, due to low, if not virtually nonexistent, local production, importation remains the only viable option, pending the emergence of a nascent local industry.

Nabil-Bey Boumezrag: “The Strong Presence of Chinese Exhibitors Is Driven by the Reconfiguration of the Automotive Market”

Speaking on the sidelines of the opening of the 17th edition of the Equip Auto Algeria exhibition, the organizer and general commissioner of the exhibition highlighted that the number of exhibitors at the 2024 edition is a historic record, never before reached since the first edition in 2006. Besides the notable presence of Algerian spare parts manufacturers and local subcontractors, the strong participation of Chinese operators and manufacturers is another striking feature of this edition, comprising a little over half.

As such, Nabil-Bey Boumezrag explains this phenomenon by the reconfiguration of the automotive market, now dominated by Chinese brands at over 80%. This dominance extends to approved passenger vehicle brands for importation, as well as commercial vehicles, trucks, and motorcycles. Therefore, according to the exhibition’s commissioner, it is natural for suppliers of adaptable spare parts to target the aftermarket.
