2024-2025 Agricultural Season: Over 3 Million Hectares Allocated to Cereal Production

BY: Dr. Hana Saada

Algiers, Algeria | October 2nd, 2024 — In an official announcement from Sétif, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Youcef Cherfa, revealed that a total of 3.069 million hectares has been earmarked for cereal cultivation for the 2024-2025 agricultural season. The minister, speaking at the launch of the plowing and sowing campaign at the “Koreichi El Amri” collective farm, explained that this area was designated based on agreements between the ministry’s central administration and local stakeholders.

Out of this vast allocation, 1.069 million hectares will be dedicated to durum wheat, while 1.017 million hectares will be reserved for barley. Cherfa noted that 4.2 million quintals of certified seeds have been made available to meet the demands of this season’s plowing and sowing efforts. The overarching goal is ambitious: to make 2025 the final year for importing durum wheat and 2026 for barley, in line with the commitments made by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

So far, 840,000 hectares have been plowed across the country in preparation for the sowing phase, which officially began on October 1st. The minister emphasized the significance of expanding cereal production in Algeria’s southern regions, where substantial areas have been set aside by local and international investors. These efforts align with the president’s pledge to increase irrigated land by one million hectares, complementing the 1.6 million hectares already irrigated nationwide.

During his visit to Sétif, Cherfa underscored the importance of providing farmers with the necessary technical support and guidance to enhance productivity. He stressed the need to follow technical protocols carefully to ensure higher yields per hectare and reiterated that all measures have been taken to guarantee the success of this season’s campaign, which is critical to achieving self-sufficiency in both durum wheat and barley.

In addition to launching the “Green Year” initiative to expand green spaces in the region, Cherfa visited a private poultry farm in the commune of Hammam Soukhna, further showcasing the government’s commitment to supporting various agricultural sectors across the country.
