27th Algiers’ International Book Fair to Mark the 70th Anniversary of the Algerian Liberation War

Algiers, Algeria | September 22nd, 2024 — The 27th edition of the Algiers International Book Fair (SILA-2024), slated for November 6 to 16, will commemorate the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of the Algerian War of Liberation. This year’s event will bring together prominent national and international figures, who will participate in a series of conferences aimed at honoring this pivotal moment in Algeria’s history, according to a statement by the Ministry of Culture and Arts.
During a coordination meeting chaired by Minister Soraya Mouloudji at the Ministry’s headquarters, the final program for this year’s fair was discussed. The meeting, attended by ministry officials, the fair’s commissioner, and members of the organizing committee, underscored the importance of making this edition exceptional, particularly given its alignment with the 70th anniversary of the Glorious Revolution.
The theme of the fair will focus on the Algerian War of Liberation (1954–2024), highlighting its historical significance and its influence on Algeria’s national identity. Intellectual and literary conferences will explore various aspects of the Revolution of November 1, 1954, and its broader global impact. Contributions from notable national and international personalities will enrich these discussions, providing a platform to reflect on the enduring legacy of the war.
In addition to commemorating Algeria’s revolution, SILA 2024 will also spotlight the Palestinian cause, a key issue with deep resonance in Algerian society. Conferences will cover topics like “The Literature of Resistance in Palestine,” “Palestine in Algerian Poetry,” and “Cinema in the Face of Zionism,” reflecting Algeria’s solidarity with Palestine’s struggle for liberation.
The fair will feature discussions on translation, intellectual thought, and contemporary literature from African and Arab perspectives. Notable panels include “Algeria-Qatar: Shared Literary Heritage” and “Decolonization Matters: Western Sahara, the Last Colony in Africa,” which will address pressing literary and political issues with a critical lens.
In addition, tributes will be paid to several cultural and literary figures, both Algerian and international, for their contributions to literature and the arts.
Minister Soraya Mouloudji highlighted the significance of SILA as Algeria’s most popular cultural gathering and one of the most prestigious events in Africa, the Arab world, and the Mediterranean. She emphasized the fair’s objective of promoting culture as a tool for progress and national development.
The 27th edition of SILA will be held at the Palace of Expositions of the Algerian Company of Fairs and Exports (SAFEX) in Algiers under the theme “Reading to Triumph.” This theme encapsulates the fair’s mission to advance knowledge and intellectual growth as a means of achieving liberation and progress.
