Algiers, Algeria | November 03rd, 2024 — The 70th anniversary of Algeria’s historic 1st of November Revolution has been celebrated with a spirit and grandeur befitting its monumental legacy. Algeria, a nation fortified by the sacrifices of its heroes and an unyielding spirit for freedom, began meticulously planning these commemorative events months ago, underscoring the exceptional importance of this milestone. The creation of a national commission by Prime Minister, under the guidance of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, exemplified Algeria’s dedication to an anniversary that not only honors the past but illuminates the path forward for the Algerian people.

On this occasion, a grand military parade captivated the nation and the world, showcasing the Algerian People’s National Army (ANP) and paying homage to the heritage of the National Liberation Army (ALN). Premier Nadir Larbaoui underscored President Tebboune’s resolute commitment to commemorating this anniversary in a manner that reflects the event’s profound national significance. The parade, unanimously hailed by observers as both grandiose and symbolic, celebrated the enduring professionalism of the ANP. Veterans, the living embodiments of Algeria’s Revolutionary spirit, praised the army’s heightened capabilities and its deep-seated connection with the people.

For Algerians, this day is a testament to a profound heritage. A surviving hero from the War of Liberation noted that these celebrations reaffirmed Algeria’s dedication to honoring its martyrs and preserving their legacy for the benefit of future generations. The sister of Larbi Ben M’hidi, one of Algeria’s most revered martyrs, emphasized that the sacrifices of these freedom fighters demand continual commitment to safeguarding Algeria’s sovereignty and dignity. The President, in a powerful address, described the military parade as a tribute to the revolutionary spirit, encapsulating the sacrifice and loyalty of a generation who, armed only with resolve and courage, stood against one of the world’s most formidable colonial powers.

At the heart of these commemorations is a spirit of genuine patriotism and unwavering nationalism, values which the President underscored in his speech. He described the ANP as “the people’s army,” dedicated to defending Algeria with unwavering resolve, and bound to its mission by a deep and authentic love for the nation. The parade was not a show of aggression but a clear affirmation of Algeria’s defensive doctrine, a commitment rooted in respect for international law and Algeria’s principled stance on peace. This defensive orientation, as President Tebboune highlighted, underscores Algeria’s strategic focus on securing peace and stability not only within its borders but also on the international stage, fulfilling its responsibilities as a beacon of security in the region.

The Revolution’s legacy is more than a memory; it is the very lifeblood of Algeria’s identity, woven into every aspect of national consciousness and aspiration. Observing the multitude of young and old waving the national flag, chanting patriotic songs, and gathering with a collective purpose, it was clear that the Revolution remains a vivid force within the Algerian spirit. This presence, seen in the eyes of youth and veterans alike, reinforces a commitment to honor the vision of Didouche Mourad, an icon of Algeria’s resistance, whose words — “If we die, defend our memory” — continue to resonate profoundly. The scenes of Algerians, shoulder to shoulder, honoring the Revolution that gave birth to their sovereignty, are a testament that this memory is preserved with reverence and vitality.

The Revolution, born from a deep-seated commitment to liberty and justice, became an inspiration for many nations striving for freedom from colonial oppression. With little more than courage, a few hunting rifles, and divine faith, Algeria’s freedom fighters confronted an entrenched colonial power, a member of NATO with substantial backing. They paid an unspeakable price, yet their sacrifices catalyzed one of the most transformative uprisings of the 20th century, forever etching the November Revolution in the annals of global resistance movements.

Today, Algerians feel the reverberations of November’s aspirations as clearly as ever, as if the call for freedom and dignity was sounded only yesterday. President Tebboune has emphasized the need to channel the ethos of the November Revolution in navigating the complex and challenging global landscape. This calls for Algerians to fortify their internal front, grounded in an unbreakable national unity and an unmatched love for their homeland. This unity is further reinforced by the National Dialogue initiative launched by President Tebboune, aimed at consolidating social cohesion and fostering a modernized, professional ANP that reflects Algeria’s enduring commitment to peace, sovereignty, and progressive advancement.

The undying love that Algerians hold for their homeland has proven, time and again, to be an impervious bulwark against external and internal adversities alike. In a world marred by instability and challenges, Algeria’s Revolution remains a source of unwavering resolve, a living testament to the spirit that shaped an independent Algeria. Today, as Algeria advances and evolves, it does so with the unshakable resolve of those who planted the seeds of liberation in 1954. Each Algerian, from the youngest to the eldest, carries within them the spirit of November, an ever-present guide and protector of Algeria’s sovereignty and legacy.
