New York, September 20, 2023 – Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the President of the Republic of Algeria, delivered a compelling address at the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, advocating for a profound transformation of the existing world order. President Tebboune passionately pleaded for a new global system characterized by fairness, justice, and multipolarity, with the ultimate goal of ensuring lasting peace and security worldwide.
In his address, President Tebboune highlighted the urgency of fostering dialogue and debate among nations, a demand for which people around the world have tirelessly strived. He emphasized that the vision he presented aligns with Algeria’s long-standing commitment to promoting equity among nations. He recalled the nation’s five-decade struggle against the shortcomings of the current world order, emphasizing that it is time for substantial change.
“Algeria has always called for a new world order marked by greater equity among nations,” President Tebboune declared. He expressed concern over the contemporary global landscape, characterized by a climate emergency and intense geostrategic struggles, which have eroded the effectiveness of the UN Security Council in maintaining global peace and security.
President Tebboune urged world leaders to unite in restoring the values and principles enshrined in the UN Charter, the very foundation upon which the United Nations was established. He called for the establishment of robust foundations that promote mutual aid and effective solidarity, essential elements for achieving peace, security, and sustainable development in a multipolar world.
During his address, President Tebboune reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering support for just causes worldwide and its willingness to utilize its mediation expertise for peaceful conflict resolution. He underscored that Algeria would never abandon those seeking freedom, citing the Palestinian and Sahrawi causes as prime examples.
Regarding the Palestinian issue, President Tebboune called on the international community to assume its responsibilities. He urged the International Court to play a more active role and called for an extraordinary general assembly of the UN to grant full membership to Palestine, asserting that this would bolster the credibility and reputation of the United Nations.
President Tebboune also reiterated Algeria’s backing for the United Nations Secretary-General’s efforts to facilitate the Sahrawi people’s quest for independence. Moreover, he expressed Algeria’s unwavering determination to continue its initiatives aimed at restoring stability to Mali while rejecting any foreign military intervention in Niger.
As a staunch advocate for the entire African continent, President Tebboune emphasized that Algeria would spare no effort in supporting development and combating terrorism across Africa. By assuming this role as a defender of the Sahelo-Saharan region, the Arab world, and global peace and security, President Tebboune offered a glimpse of the role Algeria intends to play when it assumes non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council from January 2024.
Concluding his address, President Tebboune proudly shared Algeria’s accomplishments in sustainable development and democracy. He stated that the nation had made sustainable development a national priority, yielding substantial results. Recognizing the pivotal importance of human rights in democracy, Algeria adopted a new constitution in 2020, firmly establishing the foundations and principles of democracy within its governance framework.
President Tebboune’s impassioned plea for a new, more equitable world order at the United Nations General Assembly underscores Algeria’s commitment to fostering global harmony and justice, with the hope of creating a more peaceful and secure world for all.
