ALGIERS- Rachid Hachichi, the CEO of Sonatrach, Algeria’s national hydrocarbon company, disclosed the company’s performance metrics for 2023, shedding light on significant milestones and export figures.

In his interview with APS, Hachichi revealed that Algeria exported a total of 34.9 billion cubic meters (m3) of natural gas to the European market during the year. This substantial volume was facilitated through two key gas pipelines connecting Algeria to Europe: the Enrico Mattei Transcontinental Gas Pipeline, which transported 26.2 billion m3 to Italy, and the Medgaz Pipeline, which delivered 8.7 billion m3 to Spain.

In addition to pipeline exports, Sonatrach also delivered 22.5 billion m3 of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the Arzew and Skikda LNG complexes in 2023. The company’s LNG production for the year amounted to 13 million tons (equivalent to 29 million m3 or 17.22 million tons of oil equivalent).

Furthermore, Sonatrach achieved notable milestones in the production of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and condensate. The company produced 9.4 million tons of LPG and 8.3 million tons of condensate in 2023, contributing significantly to Algeria’s hydrocarbon exports.

Shifting focus to the petroleum sector, Sonatrach transported 23.3 million tons of oil equivalent (TEP) comprising crude oil and condensate to oil ports for exportation. This highlights Algeria’s continued role as a key player in the global oil market.

Overall, Sonatrach’s total production for 2023 reached 193.8 million TEP. Hachichi emphasized the company’s commitment to enhancing its refining capabilities to maximize the value of its hydrocarbon resources. Sonatrach currently operates six refineries with a combined processing capacity exceeding 30 million tons per year, a capacity that has been bolstered by ongoing rehabilitation and modernization efforts since 2009.

Looking ahead, Sonatrach is actively pursuing projects to expand its refining capacity, including the construction of the new Hassi Messaoud refinery, scheduled to commence production in the second half of 2027. Additionally, the company aims to commission the fuel-oil conversion project at the Skikda refinery by late 2028, further strengthening Algeria’s position in the global energy market.
