ALGIERS- In a significant development for Algeria’s energy sector, the Gas Research Institute (GRI), under the auspices of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), was inaugurated in Algiers on Thursday. The institute’s establishment is poised to position Algeria as a global hub for gas development, according to Mohamed Arkab, Minister of Energy and Mines.
Minister Arkab emphasized that the GRI presents a valuable opportunity to revitalize and promote scientific research and executive training. Moreover, it aims to foster partnerships with research centers and universities in member countries and related institutions.
The inauguration of the GRI headquarters coincided with the 7th GECF Summit, scheduled from February 29 to March 2 in Algiers. The event was attended by the Secretary-General of the GECF, along with numerous Algerian and foreign dignitaries.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Arkab underscored the institute’s role in facilitating information exchange, innovation, and technology transfer to enhance best practices. The GRI aims to leverage modern technologies across the gas value chain to expand gas resource bases, improve efficiency, and ensure optimal utilization and management.
Algeria’s commitment to gas development and innovation aligns with its strategic position as a leading gas exporter and member of the GECF. The establishment of the GRI reflects the country’s dedication to advancing research and education in the gas sector, contributing to global energy security and sustainability.
As Algeria continues to invest in its energy infrastructure and capacity-building initiatives, the GRI is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of gas development, both domestically and internationally. It represents a collaborative platform for knowledge exchange, capacity-building, and technological advancement in the global gas industry.
