ALGIERS- The inauguration ceremony of the Gas Research Institute (GRI), affiliated with the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), held in Algiers on Thursday, underscores Algeria’s pivotal role in spearheading international gas development initiatives. Mohamed Arkab, Minister of Energy and Mines, emphasized that the newly established institute will elevate Algeria as a global center for gas development and serve as a valuable opportunity to rejuvenate and promote scientific research and cadre training, in addition to fostering partnerships with research centers, universities, and related entities of member countries.

The inauguration, presided over by Minister Arkab, took place on the sidelines of the 7th Summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum scheduled from February 29th to March 2nd in Algiers. Notable attendees included the Secretary-General of the GECF, representatives from prominent energy corporations like Gazprom, and high-ranking officials from member states.

Minister Arkab expressed Algeria’s honor in hosting this scientific and research institution, emphasizing its significance for all GECF member states in bolstering scientific and technological cooperation. He highlighted the institute’s role in facilitating information exchange, innovation, and technology transfer to enhance gas value chains, expand gas resource bases, improve efficiency, and ensure optimal exploitation and management.

The establishment of the GRI, pursuant to the decision of GECF member states at the 2017 Bolivia Summit, signifies a framework for scientific cooperation, innovation exchange, and expertise sharing. Minister Arkab underscored that Algeria’s efforts in collaboration and coordination with GECF partners led to its recognition as a global gas development hub and training center for cadre development, along with fostering partnerships with research centers, member state universities, and similar institutions.

The unanimous selection of Algeria as the institute’s headquarters underscores its valuable and effective role within the forum, coupled with its mastery of cutting-edge gas exploitation technologies across the entire production chain. Minister Arkab emphasized Algeria’s commitment to sustainable gas development as a fuel for energy transition, focusing on enhancing gas extraction techniques, reducing production and transportation losses, and minimizing environmental impact and carbon footprint.

Minister Arkab expressed confidence in the institute’s stakeholders’ dedication to facilitating experience and expertise exchange to enhance the role of natural gas in the energy mix of many countries. He stressed the need to align with the challenges of scientific and technological research in the gas industry to preserve this invaluable resource for the benefit of current and future generations.

The Gas Research Institute symbolizes Algeria’s unwavering commitment to advancing global gas development, scientific collaboration, and technological innovation, reinforcing its position as a key player in shaping the future of the energy landscape.
