Algiers, Algeria | July 4th, 2024 — On Wednesday, 8,000 youths from various regions gathered on the Sablettes promenade in Algiers to celebrate Independence Day. This event, organized by the High Council for Youth (CSJ), brought together participants aged 18 to 40, including students, university club members, vocational training institute members, content creators, association members, volunteers, and entrepreneurs. The celebration featured a variety of cultural and artistic activities to commemorate this historic day.
High-Level Participation
Several ministers joined the youths in the celebration, including Fayçal Bentaleb, Minister of Labour, Employment, and Social Security; Abderrahmane Hammad, Minister of Youth and Sports; Yacine Merabi, Minister of Vocational Training and Education; Noureddine Benbraham, President of the National Observatory of Civil Society (ONSC); Moundir Bouden, Vice President of the People’s National Assembly (APN); and the delegate of the wali of Hussein-Dey, along with other local authorities and sector representatives.
A National Memory Initiative
The gathering, themed “Youth of Change, Youth of Liberation, Youth of Construction,” marks the second edition of this event and is part of the 62nd Independence and Youth Day celebrations. CSJ President Mustapha Hidaoui emphasized that the initiative aims to strengthen young people’s commitment to preserving national memory, glorifying national history, and upholding the values of citizenship. The council continues its efforts to engage youths in these principles and to ensure their voices are heard in the political arena.
Collaboration with the Ministry of Moudjahidine
A significant highlight of the event was the signing of an agreement between the Ministry of Moudjahidine and the CSJ. This collaboration aims to bolster efforts to safeguard national memory and the nation’s values, preparing a new generation to draw inspiration from Algeria’s rich history of political and revolutionary activism. A joint commission has been established to work on these objectives and to encourage youth participation in the upcoming presidential election on September 7.
Engaging the Youth in the Electoral Process
Hidaoui stressed the importance of convincing the youth to actively participate in the electoral process and to be a positive force for change. The CSJ has launched a campaign through its local committees to raise awareness among young people about the importance of registering to vote. The council has also planned a comprehensive program to educate youths about the significance of the forthcoming elections, with regular field visits to motivate young voters.
Ensuring a Safe Celebration
The event was secured by operational units of the Algiers Security Directorate, with ambulances on standby to ensure the smooth running of the festivities. This celebration not only marked Independence Day but also reinforced the role of young people in shaping Algeria’s future through active civic engagement.
