The United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland, stressed on Wednesday the need for a coordinated approach to overcome the political, economic and institutional obstacles that stand in the way of an Israeli-Palestinian peace.
The deterioration of the economic, security and political situation in the occupied Palestinian territories continues, and measures are urgently needed to prevent the situation from worsening, he told the Security Council during a briefing Press.
The Palestinian Authority’s fiscal situation remains dire, threatening its institutional stability and ability to deliver services to its people. Violence also continues unabated across the occupied Palestinian territories, including by Israeli settlers. It causes many Palestinian and Israeli victims, and increases the risk of a generalized escalation. Settlement activities, demolitions and evictions also continued, fueling desperation and dampening the chances of reaching a negotiated solution, he said.
