E-Commerce: call for a review of new taxes on packages of computer and technical equipment

The Group of Algerian Digital Actors (GAAN) has called on the services concerned for a “radical” revision of the new customs taxes on postal parcels in the context of e-commerce, with regard to computer equipment and all technical and their accessories.

GAAN’s appeal is justified by the fact that students and researchers will be affected by these measures, which will lead to higher prices for certain goods they need for their scientific and technical activities, in particular those not available on the national market.

“It is inconceivable to sanction all citizens by the actions of a small group. Moreover, each citizen who resorts to this type of purchase, draws from his own resources and in no way affects the country’s foreign exchange reserves. “, said the GAAN in a press release.

“Many citizens, in particular students and researchers, will be strongly affected by these new taxes which will lead to an increase in the cost of goods which they greatly need in their scientific and technical activities, especially since certain needs in computer equipment and accessories with specific characteristics are not available on the national market”.

The Groupement also affirmed “its strict respect for the laws governing trade in Algeria and the efforts of Customs aimed at protecting the national economy, as well as its rejection of the exploitation of e-commerce to circumvent the law”, underlining in this regard “the right of digital players to acquire digital material via the Internet for their own needs”.
