The Palestinian question will be on the menu, Monday, of a quarterly debate open to the Security Council, in a context marked by the Zionist attacks against the Palestinians and the Al-Aqsa mosque during this month of Ramadan.
The Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland, will brief on this occasion.
Council members last met to discuss the latest developments in occupied Al-Quds in closed-door consultations on April 19.
The meeting had been requested by China, France, Ireland, Norway and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to discuss the situation in occupied Al-Quds after the Zionist attacks against the Palestinians in Al-Aqsa.
According to the spokeswoman for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ravina Shamdasani, the conduct of the Zionist occupation forces against the Palestinians, particularly on April 15, “raises serious concerns about the fact that the use of force was widespread, unnecessary and indiscriminate”.
The Palestinian Authority and several Arab countries considered Al-Aqsa’s Zionist attacks as highly “provocative”.
On April 21, the League of Arab States (LAS) convened an emergency meeting in Amman at Jordan’s request.
In a statement issued after the meeting, the LAS condemned “Zionist attacks and violations against worshipers” in Al-Aqsa, warning that they could trigger a wider conflict.
At Monday’s meeting, Tor Wennesland is expected to take stock of the security situation in occupied Al-Quds and call for dialogue, de-escalation and respect for the status quo at holy sites, according to diplomatic sources.
