ALGIERS- The Justice and Development Party expressed concern over the Moroccan government’s tendency to blame previous administrations, highlighting a clear evasion of responsibility and a failure to address crises effectively.
Fatima Zahra Bata, a parliamentary deputy for the party, emphasized that the water crisis, particularly in the agricultural sector consuming over 87% of the country’s water resources, demands attention. She questioned why agriculture consumes such vast amounts of water and why Morocco exports water in agricultural products that do not achieve food sovereignty while facing water scarcity.
Bata stressed that the water issue should remain free from political maneuvers and urged for objective discussions on the matter.
Zionist-Moroccan Partnership Exploits Water Wealth for Avocado Production
Following the normalization agreement between the Zionist entity and Morocco, the Zionist Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced intentions to invest approximately $9 million in the Moroccan agricultural sector, aiming to produce 10,000 tons of avocados annually. This announcement comes days after Zionist Foreign Minister Yair Lapid’s visit to Rabat and the signing of agreements, including in the agricultural sector.
In a tweet, the Zionist Foreign Ministry stated, “Hadera, Israel’s largest avocado producers and exporters, announced the launch of a large-scale project to produce avocados in Morocco.”
The Moroccan government has been criticized for exacerbating the water crisis by delaying the completion of dams. Despite possessing a significant number of dams, current water levels do not exceed 23%. The delay in constructing 14 dams, as outlined in the Court of Auditors’ report, is primarily attributed to property expropriation delays and contractors’ inability to fulfill their obligations, exacerbated by the COVID-19 crisis.
As Morocco grapples with a worsening water crisis, concerns arise over partnerships that exploit water resources without addressing fundamental issues such as incomplete dam projects. The government’s failure to prioritize water management and infrastructure development exacerbates the country’s vulnerability to drought and its reliance on external investments for agricultural production.
