ALGIERS- In a recent statement to Sputnik Agency, President Brahim Ghali of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic emphasized the referendum as a “middle ground” solution to the Western Sahara conflict with Morocco. Ghali underscored the referendum’s significance, asserting that it represents a balanced approach given the divergent positions of the involved parties.
“Referendum, in itself, is a compromise solution because we support our unconditional independence… The Kingdom of Morocco advocates for annexation. Between our demands and the illegitimate Moroccan demand, which lacks sovereignty, historical right, legal right, political right, or ethical right and is merely expansionist, the proposal of a referendum as a compromise emerged,” stated Ghali.
Furthermore, Ghali insisted that any compromise must entail a free, fair, and impartial referendum, allowing Sahrawis to freely choose their future and respecting the outcome. He highlighted the Sahrawi people’s resilience, noting their enduring struggle against Moroccan occupation despite facing unequal odds.
“We have engaged in an unequal war, but we are waging a war of attrition that affects the Moroccan economy, the morale of the Moroccan army, and the socio-economic and political situation within the Kingdom of Morocco… There is no equality in numbers or resources, and the Moroccan regime is currently in absolute alliance with the Zionist entity,” Ghali remarked.
In a related context, Ghali expressed his anticipation for a visit to Moscow, expressing hope for reciprocal visits between the two sides. “We look forward to it. In any case, we are working for the relationship to develop so that we visit and are visited, and there are mutual visits at various levels,” he stated.
Regarding the evaluation of the UN role in resolving the crisis, Ghali reiterated the Sahrawi demand for the UN to fulfill its mission in the region, particularly in organizing a referendum, which he described as the UN’s mandate in decolonization issues.
“The United Nations, we demand that it applies its mission in the region, organizing a referendum. This is the United Nations’ mandate, considering it a decolonization issue,” Ghali asserted.
He criticized the Moroccan obstructionism, highlighting the lack of progress due to Moroccan interference and obstruction of UN envoys’ efforts.
“Since 1991, no personal envoy has escaped the Moroccan attack. Any personal envoy who does not succumb to Moroccan blackmail is subjected to an attack… We were initially the first to accept [UN Special Envoy] De Mistura and dealt with him until today,” Ghali remarked.
Ghali emphasized that despite ongoing communication and attempts to thaw the ice, genuine support from the Security Council is needed to advance towards the implementation of MINURSO’s original mandate outlined in resolutions 690 and 658, which specify organizing a self-determination referendum for the Sahrawi people.
