ALGIERS- The operation for direct sale (from producer to consumer) of marine and inland fishery and aquaculture products, as well as processed foods, was launched on Monday across more than 174 sales points nationwide.
In a statement to the Algerian Press Service (APS), Nabil Aouich, the Director General of the Algerian Chamber of Fisheries and Aquaculture (CAPA), stated that this operation was being implemented “gradually,” noting that it was launched in more than 27 provinces under three coordination points (Oran, Guelma, and Algiers), including Relizane, Aïn Defla, Boumerdès, Béjaïa, Skikda, El Taref, Jijel, Oran, Sidi Bel Abbès, Tlemcen, Médéa, Djelfa, and Tissemsilt.
In Algiers, over 10 sales points were opened in various municipalities such as Casbah (Place des Martyrs), Aïn Benian, Baba Hassen, Birkhadem, Douera, Kouba, Sidi M’hamed (1er mai), Birtouta, Eucalyptus, and Sidi Abdellah, with plans to reach 20 sales points in the coming days.
The sale operation takes place in specially equipped stands, including those set up at ports and Ramadan markets.
The prices of dorade and red tilapia have been set at 1,250 DA and 590 DA, respectively. Various canned products such as tuna and sardines are also offered at “factory prices” at these sales points.
A digital platform has been created to locate direct sales points to facilitate access to the products offered.
An awareness campaign has been launched for professionals to encourage them to participate in the initiative to reduce prices as a form of solidarity during this holy month.
According to Mr. Aouiche, the sector ensures the continuation of this operation even after Ramadan to ensure the availability of aquaculture products throughout the year at competitive prices, through the establishment of sales points for professionals and the coverage of expenses from direct sales operations.
These spaces include sales points under CAPA and others from the private sector with contracts with these chambers. Several commercial partnership agreements have been signed with private operators, including agricultural farms, processing and packaging factories, refrigerated trucks, and others to contribute to price regulation.
Furthermore, contracts have been signed with fishing vessel owners to sell their products directly to consumers at the port at production prices.
Mr. Aouiche added that this operation has seen significant turnout by citizens who have expressed satisfaction with the prices.
Organized in coordination with governors, the operation aims to bring fishery products closer to citizens, regulate market prices, and diversify protein sources in addition to red and white meats, Mr. Aouiche concluded.
