Moroccan Confederation of Labour Criticizes Continued Deterioration of Social Conditions, High Unemployment Rates

ALGIERS- The Moroccan Confederation of Labour (CFL) has raised alarms over the escalating pace of social and professional protests in the current context, attributing them to deteriorating living conditions, persistent inflation, soaring unemployment rates, acute water crises in various regions, and the adverse impact of drought on farmers.

In a statement released by its executive bureau, the CFL criticized the systematic tightening of rights and freedoms, particularly trade union freedoms, under the current government’s policies. It accused the government of persisting in anti-social approaches, including privatization of public services and goods, with the latest episode being the privatization of several public health institutions.

Expressing solidarity with all sectors where national unions are engaged in protests and struggles for their legitimate demands, the CFL underscored its support for those detained in connection with the education protests, calling for their immediate return to their workplaces without conditions.

The CFL denounced the government’s decision to bypass the social dialogue round in September of last year, insisting that the upcoming round, scheduled to commence next week, must provide concrete answers to the dire social situation. It stressed the importance of fulfilling the commitments outlined in the April 2022 agreement, including general wage increases in both the public and private sectors, revising income tax brackets, establishing new promotion criteria, and ensuring respect for trade union freedoms.

Furthermore, the CFL expressed unwavering solidarity with the residents of Fekkik, affirming its support for their movement defending the right to water and opposing its privatization and transfer to the private sector.
