ALGIERS- In a world where innovation thrives, the concept of e-commerce has significantly reshaped traditional business models. This journey into the realm of electronic trade has been particularly impactful in the domain of date products, where traditional markets are now seamlessly transitioning into digital platforms.
The journey of Mohamed Mouafek, the owner of the Degleti platform, commenced with an invitation to exhibit his date products at an international expo in Algeria. It was here that the seeds of e-commerce were sown. Observing a burgeoning production of date derivatives in the south and a corresponding demand in the north and international markets, the necessity to explore digital avenues became apparent to him.
“Introducing a new concept was born out of participation in conferences and exhibitions, focusing on the abundant production of date derivatives and the growing demand domestically and internationally,” he stated.
And to add, “Conducting market research and social media marketing studies led to the initiation of e-commerce, obtaining certification in e-commerce from a British school, followed by administrative procedures and the establishment of a digital platform, culminating in participation in the International Algerian Exhibition and the decision to open a physical store.”
From Concept to Reality: Setting Up Shop Online
Armed with insights and a strategic roadmap, Mr. Mouafek embarked on the journey of establishing an online presence. Administrative formalities were addressed, including acquiring commercial licenses and developing a digital platform. Participation in international expos further bolstered their visibility and credibility in the market.
Beyond traditional date varieties, Mr. Mouafek ventured into innovative products like date honey, chocolate-coated dates, and assorted date-based confectionaries. Quality assurance became paramount, with a focus on natural ingredients and certifications attesting to product purity and safety.
He discussed plans for expansion into four major cities while acknowledging constraints in certain areas where residents can rely on the platform to make online orders.
“Citizens can browse and purchase products, with delivery available in 58 provinces. We will collaborate with chefs and create novel date-based products, such as lemon-infused date sugar and date syrup with orange undertones. Moreover, catering to dietary preferences, a line of gluten-free date products was introduced, certified by relevant authorities,” he further elaborated.
He added, “We are offering date sugar with lemon, carob, and orange flavors, catering to children and individuals with celiac disease, while ensuring the natural and organic quality of the products with medical certifications. Recently, we introduced natural products, including date sugar and soap, that underwent rigorous testing to obtain medical certification, ensuring consumers of their safety and efficacy, with plans to stock them in-store and facilitate online purchases for convenience.”
The journey wasn’t without its challenges. Obtaining medical certifications for date-based products required substantial time and effort. However, these certifications served as a testament to product safety and facilitated consumer trust.
He mentioned, “I have developed a date soap, which took me six months to create and complete all the necessary safety certifications.”
Facilitating Consumer Convenience
Mr. Mouafek ensured seamless payment and delivery options that cater to the evolving needs of consumers, stating that a significant portion of Algerians opt for payment upon receipt.
