ALGIERS- In a move towards bolstering its renewable energy infrastructure, Algeria took a significant step forward as Minister of Energy, Mr. Mohamed Arkab, initiated the construction of a new solar power plant in Touggourt. During a working and inspection visit to the region on Monday, Minister Arkab laid the foundation stone for the project, which will see the establishment of a photovoltaic solar plant with a production capacity of 150 megawatts at El Annat.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Arkab emphasized that the commencement of work on this project marks a significant milestone in Algeria’s energy transition efforts, in line with the directives of the President of the Republic. He stated, “The implementation of this program will help preserve the environment and save natural gas used in electricity production.”

The project, expected to be completed within 14 months, has been entrusted to the state-owned enterprise Cosider. According to a statement from the Ministry, the construction of the solar plant is projected to create 500 new job opportunities during the implementation phase. Once operational, the plant will comprise 27 photovoltaic sections, contributing to Algeria’s renewable energy goals.

This initiative represents the second project launched by the Ministry of Energy as part of the country’s ambitious plan to develop 15 gigawatts (GW) of solar energy. It follows a similar venture recently inaugurated in the El-Meghaier province. Algeria’s commitment to expanding its renewable energy capacity underscores its dedication to sustainable development and reducing dependency on fossil fuels.

The Touggourt solar power plant project aligns with Algeria’s broader strategy to diversify its energy sources and harness its abundant solar resources. By harnessing solar energy, the country aims to meet growing electricity demand while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating the impacts of climate change.

Furthermore, the development of renewable energy infrastructure is expected to enhance energy security, stimulate economic growth, and create new opportunities for local communities. It also reinforces Algeria’s position as a regional leader in renewable energy deployment, setting an example for sustainable development initiatives across the continent.
