Morocco: Student Protest Escalates Amidst Police Summons, National March

ALGIERS- The ongoing resistance led by medical, pharmaceutical, and dental students in Morocco against the recent educational reforms has escalated to a concerning level. This escalation follows the Ministry of Higher Education’s decision to summon approximately 66 students to face disciplinary councils and suspend 20 students from their studies and participation in student-related activities for periods ranging from one to two years.

For nearly three months, medical students have been boycotting classes and have refrained from participating in the end-of-semester exams for two consecutive sessions. Moreover, they have organized various protests and demonstrations, vehemently opposing the implementation of new amendments to the education system, particularly the reduction of the training period from 7 to 6 years.

In a statement released on April 1st, the National Committee of Medical, Ophthalmology, and Pharmacy Students disclosed that student representatives in Oujda were subjected to legal charges by the public prosecutor’s office due to their involvement in the prolonged protests.

The committee condemned the Ministries of Higher Education and Health for jeopardizing the future of 25,000 students by neglecting to engage in constructive dialogue and pursue immediate resolutions to the prevailing crisis, which could potentially result in a lost academic year detrimental to the nation and its youth.

In response, the committee announced plans for a nationwide march on April 25th, themed “March of Resilience,” alongside adopting various protest strategies, including a national media campaign, localized protest initiatives, and a scheduled press conference throughout the upcoming days of April.
