Algeria was brilliantly elected on Tuesday as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) for the period 2023-2025, in recognition of its role as a pivotal country in its region, anxious to promote the principles and values of human rights in the world.
Algeria won 178 votes during the ballot which took place in New York during the 17th plenary session of the UN General Assembly, and at the end of which 14 new countries will join this intergovernmental body of the system responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights in the world, dealing with situations of human rights violations and formulating recommendations on their subject.
This UN body is made up of 47 members elected for a three-year term, according to a geographical distribution which gives 13 seats to African States, 13 seats also to Asia-Pacific States, 8 seats to Latin American and Caribbean States. , 7 seats to Western European and other States and 6 seats to Eastern European States.
Algeria’s accession to the HRC, from January 1, 2023 for the third time since the creation of this body in 2006, will not only enable it to work for the promotion and protection of human rights in around the world but also to confirm its place in the concert of nations and will consolidate its candidacy for a seat as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the period 2024-2025, the elections of which will be held in June 2023.
