ALGIERS- The General Directorate of Civil Protection initiated a comprehensive earthquake simulation exercise on Thursday, engaging over 4000 agents from all ranks across 42 provinces in the country.

As outlined in a statement from the Civil Protection, this exercise simulates an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter located 6 km southwest of Oued El Bardi municipality. The simulation involves scenarios of loss of life and significant damage to urban areas, infrastructure, and buildings.

The most affected municipalities in this simulated earthquake are Oued El Bardi, El Hachimia, Sour El Ghozlane, and El Asnam. Due to the severity of the disaster and limited resources, the local Civil Protection teams in Bouira requested both national and international reinforcements for evacuating earthquake victims. The statement indicated that 86 members, comprising urban search and rescue (USAR) teams certified to UN standards, are participating in this extensive exercise, which spans 6 days.

A team from the Tunisian Civil Protection, consisting of 60 members, is scheduled to arrive in Bouira on Friday to join the intervention and rescue operations on the ground. This collaboration highlights the importance of regional cooperation in managing disasters and underscores the significance of joint efforts in mitigating the impact of such crises.
