Algiers, Algeria | May 20, 2024 — Driven by the potential of investment opportunities and market appeal in Algeria, approximately thirty Marseilles-based companies specializing in maritime transport and logistics embarked on a comprehensive four-day tour to explore potential investments and exchanges between the two regions.
Accompanied by Business France Algeria, diplomatic representatives from France, and senior officials from the major ports of Marseilles, the companies engaged in an intensive schedule. This included B-to-B meetings, networking events, colloquia, field visits, and meetings with public institutions, aimed at evaluating the investment landscape and opportunities for bilateral cooperation.
An Engaging Start
The tour began with a workshop organized by the Algerian-French Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIAF), featuring French foreign trade advisors and the regional economic service of the French Embassy in Algeria. Discussions focused on Algeria’s macroeconomic and financial situation, an analysis of the transport sector, strategies for business development in Algeria, and the structure of bilateral trade between the two nations.
Following the workshop, the first Algerian-French conference on the maritime economy took place in collaboration with the Via Marseille Fos association and the Grand Port Maritime of Marseilles. The event saw participation from the Algerian Ministry of Trade and Export Promotion, the Mayor of Marseilles, the French Ambassador to Algeria, and the President of the Supervisory Board of the Port of Marseilles. Key topics included maritime traffic between Marseilles Fos and Algeria, port passage fluidity, and the development of the passenger and rolling cargo sectors.
Building Partnerships
The visit aimed to foster closer ties between maritime sector stakeholders from both countries, highlighting cooperation and partnership opportunities. The delegation was welcomed by the Algerian Investment Promotion Agency (Aapi) to discuss recent regulations and investment procedures in Algeria.
Marseilles Mayor Benoît Payan emphasized the importance of this collaboration during his visit with the President of the Republic, encouraging further engagement between business communities from both regions. “This visit is an opportunity for both Marseillais and French entrepreneurs to deepen their connections,” he stated.
Ongoing Efforts by Business France
Earlier in March, Business France organized the 15th edition of the Algeria meetings in Paris, Lyon, and Marseilles. According to Romain Keraval, Director of Business France in Algeria, the aim was to engage operators in their regions and increase the number of cities involved to directly mobilize local business leaders and facilitate exchanges. The visited regions host numerous companies with international aspirations or those looking to expand abroad.
Business France partnered with employer organizations in France (Medef International/CPME) and Algeria (Crea/Unep), with operational support from regional chambers of commerce and industry, to promote partnership opportunities with Algerian companies and provide updated insights on their needs.
Strategic Locations
Keraval highlighted the strategic selection of Paris, Lyon, and Marseilles due to their positions on the north-south axis naturally leading to Algeria. “Marseilles, known for its maritime openness to the Mediterranean, boasts modern infrastructures and a dynamic entrepreneurial fabric,” he noted.
This four-day tour not only strengthened economic ties but also showcased Algeria’s potential as a promising investment destination for Marseilles-based companies, setting the stage for future collaborations and economic growth between the two regions.
