Algiers, Algeria | May 21, 2024 — Algerian student organizations have expressed their appreciation for the significant advancements in the higher education and scientific research sectors, attributing these improvements to the commitments and reforms implemented by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. These reforms have positioned universities and research institutions as pivotal drivers of economic development and progress.

Speaking to the APS on the occasion of National Student Day, which commemorates the 68th anniversary of the May 19, 1956, student strike, Boudiaf Abdelatif Omar, Secretary General of the National Union of Algerian Students (UNEA), highlighted the substantial progress made in recent years. “Thanks to the realization of President Tebboune’s commitments and reforms, the university, students, and scientific research have become pillars of national development, change, and economic progress,” he stated.

Omar emphasized that these “comprehensive and profound reforms” have touched all aspects of the university community, including students, teachers, and researchers. He noted that the university’s integration with its socio-economic environment and the alignment of scientific specializations with society’s and the job market’s needs have been key factors in this progress. This has led to the establishment of several higher schools in important scientific disciplines such as mathematics, modern technologies, and digital economy.

One of the significant outcomes of these reforms is the digital revolution that has improved university management, educational programs, and the widespread use of modern technological tools in academic activities. “The digital transformation of Algerian universities has positioned them as leaders in economic development and revival by promoting entrepreneurial spirit and encouraging students to create start-ups, thereby driving significant dynamics across various sectors and specializations, in line with the state’s goal of encouraging national production,” Omar added.

The UNEA leader also pointed out the positive rankings of Algerian universities, which now occupy leading positions at the Arab and African levels in terms of research, studies, and scientific and academic publications. He urged today’s students to follow in the footsteps of those who participated in the Glorious Liberation Revolution and to support the state’s efforts to strengthen the domestic front and build a developed economy.

Improvements in Training and Mentoring

Mohamed El Hadi Zemouli, Secretary General of the General Union of Free Students (UGEL), echoed these sentiments, noting “the significant strides” made by Algerian universities in recent years, particularly following the “complete adoption of digitization,” which has notably improved training and mentoring. Zemouli praised President Tebboune’s commitment to connecting the university with its economic environment through various decisions and mechanisms. He cited, among other initiatives, the defense of theses and dissertations within the framework of start-ups, which has led to the creation of hundreds of companies contributing to the country’s economic dynamism in various fields.

Highlighting the “central” role of students during the Glorious Liberation Revolution and in the nation’s development battle, Zemouli stressed that students must “align with the state’s direction, under the leadership of the President of the Republic, to achieve progress, development, and prosperity.”

Naoufel Kechoud, President of the National Organization for Student Solidarity (ONSE), remarked that the reforms initiated by the President are meeting the aspirations of the university community, especially students. He emphasized that the introduction of digitization in higher education institutions allows students to pursue their scientific studies peacefully. “The implementation of the President’s commitments and his dedication to developing this sector have enabled universities and scientific research to become essential tools for achieving economic takeoff, thanks to new inventions and innovations,” Kechoud stated. He called on today’s students to “contribute effectively to the realization of major national projects” because “the student of today is the leader of Algeria tomorrow.”

The collective recognition from these student organizations underscores the transformative impact of President Tebboune’s reforms on the higher education and scientific research sectors, highlighting their crucial role in fostering economic growth and innovation in Algeria.
