Algiers, Algeria | July 30th, 2024 — Messaoud Bendridi, Director General of Agricultural Production at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, announced on Monday the successful conclusion of the cereal harvest campaign for the 2023-2024 season in the southern wilayas, with operations in the northern regions set to continue until August 15.
At a national meeting with sector officials, chaired by Minister Youcef Cherfa, Bendridi detailed the harvest progress. In the southern wilayas, which cover 106,000 hectares of the national total of approximately 3 million hectares, the cereal yield reached 4 million quintals (400,000 tonnes). This figure represents 96% of the targets set by the Ministry. The highest production levels were reported in the wilayas of Biskra, El Meniaa, and Adrar.
Progress in Northern Wilayas
In the northern wilayas, where the harvest is still underway, the average yield for durum wheat stands at 20 quintals per hectare, with soft wheat yielding the same average. Barley production has achieved a yield of 15 quintals per hectare as of July 28. The harvested area in the north has surpassed 1.1 million hectares, which constitutes 40% of the total cultivated area of over 2.8 million hectares. By this date, 18 million quintals of cereals have been collected from northern wilayas, including Guelma, Mila, Constantine, and Sétif, accounting for 47% of the total northern production.
Future Outlook
The continued harvesting efforts in the northern wilayas are expected to further enhance the overall cereal production figures for the season. The successful conclusion of the harvest in the southern wilayas, coupled with ongoing progress in the north, underscores the effectiveness of the strategies implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, paving the way for a robust cereal production season.
