Algeria Sets Ambitious Cereal Cultivation Target for 2024-2025 Season

Algiers, Algeria | July 30th, 2024 — The Algerian Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has unveiled an ambitious plan for the 2024-2025 agricultural season, aiming to cultivate 3.2 million hectares of cereal crops. This substantial goal will be supported by the allocation of 5.2 million quintals of seeds, as announced by Minister Youcef Cherfa during a national meeting with sector officials on Monday.

Minister Cherfa emphasized that this new target reflects a major commitment to advancing cereal production. He has urged agricultural service directors across the wilayas to integrate digital tools for data collection related to cultivated land and seed requirements. This push for digitization is anticipated to streamline preparations for the sowing campaign, ensuring a more efficient process.

By the end of August, specific targets for each wilaya will be established. Cherfa assured that all necessary seeds and fertilizers will be provided to farmers to support the ambitious production goals. Reflecting on the previous season, Cherfa described the outcomes as a “miracle,” considering the distribution challenges faced with seeds and fertilizers. He noted that a resolution to these issues was achieved in December 2023, and has instructed directors to carefully assess the needs of professionals for the forthcoming season to avoid similar problems.

In the southern wilayas, where the previous season’s yield ranged from 47 to 51 quintals per hectare, Cherfa is projecting an increase to at least 55 quintals per hectare for the upcoming season. This anticipated improvement is bolstered by President Tebboune’s decision to expand cereal cultivation in the south to 500,000 hectares.

For legume cultivation, a target of 150 hectares has been set. Cherfa highlighted the need to address declines in legume production and has instructed sector officials to manage inputs, prepare seeds and fertilizers, and take necessary measures before the end of October 2024. He emphasized the importance of finalizing the designated area for legume cultivation by August 10.

Additionally, Cherfa stressed the importance of expanding maize cultivation to achieve self-sufficiency, with plans to increase cultivated areas over the next three years. This strategic focus aims to enhance Algeria’s agricultural self-reliance and improve overall food security.
