Algiers, Algeria | September 5th, 2024 — In 2023, Algeria’s photovoltaic industry achieved a substantial increase in its annual production capacity, reaching 469 megawatts (MW), a notable rise from 346 MW in 2022, representing a 35% growth. This impressive expansion is underscored in a recent report by the Commissariat aux énergies renouvelables et à l’efficacité énergétique (CEREFE), which highlights Algeria’s continued efforts to boost its renewable energy sector.

As of the end of 2023, Algeria boasts six photovoltaic (PV) module assembly and encapsulation plants, with a combined production capacity of 469 MW, reflecting a significant increase of 123 MW compared to 2022. These figures were provided by the Ministry of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production and featured in the fourth annual report on renewable energy achievements by CEREFE, a copy of which was obtained by the Algeria Press Service (APS).

The photovoltaic industry’s expansion is further illustrated by the output of these six plants, which collectively produced nearly 12.47 MW of electricity in 2023. This production was supported by the direct employment of 283 individuals, demonstrating the sector’s growing contribution to the national economy.

Beyond the PV module production, Algeria’s renewable energy sector includes two factories dedicated to the production of solar batteries, with a combined annual capacity of approximately 19,000 units. Additionally, the industry comprises two solar water heater manufacturing units, two solar cable manufacturers with an annual production capacity of 1,250 kilometers, and four units specializing in the production of structures and supports for PV systems.

In 2023, the sector expanded further with the inauguration of three new production units specializing in solar public lighting systems. These new facilities have an impressive combined annual production capacity of 510,000 units. Collectively, the 19 companies operating within this sector now employ approximately 2,188 individuals, contributing significantly to job creation in Algeria.

The robust growth of Algeria’s photovoltaic industry is complemented by substantial investments in education and research within the renewable energy field. By the end of 2023, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MESRS) reported the presence of 1,033 academic researchers and permanent researchers actively engaged in this domain. Notably, 87% of these professionals hold doctoral degrees, with 60% occupying senior academic ranks.

The MESRS has also developed a comprehensive infrastructure to support research and development in renewable energy. This includes 46 research laboratories, two dedicated research centers— the Renewable Energy Development Center (CDER) and the Semiconductor Technology Research Center for Energy (CRTSE)— which together encompass five research units. Additionally, the ministry oversees four technological platforms and operates a National Higher School specializing in renewable energy. In 2023, a thematic research network focused on hydrogen was established, further broadening the scope of Algeria’s renewable energy research initiatives.

During the period from 2020 to 2023, the MESRS launched 48 socio-economically impactful research projects in the fields of renewable energy and energy efficiency. These initiatives include 12 projects specifically targeting hydrogen research and 27 projects under the National Research Program (PNR) aimed at enhancing energy security.

Parallel to these academic and research advancements, the Ministry of Vocational Training and Education (MFEP) has made significant strides in developing a skilled workforce to support the renewable energy sector. The MFEP currently oversees 68 training centers and institutions offering specialized programs in renewable energy and energy efficiency. These institutions are well-equipped with the necessary pedagogical tools and staffed by 93 qualified trainers dedicated to ensuring high-quality education for trainees and apprentices in the sector.

The impact of these efforts is evident in the increasing number of graduates emerging from these programs. During the 2022-2023 academic year, 1,222 students graduated in various specialties related to renewable energy and energy efficiency. This marks a 49% increase compared to the previous academic year and an astounding 297% rise from the 2020-2021 period, when only 308 graduates were recorded.

Between 2020 and 2023, the total number of graduates specializing in renewable energy and energy efficiency reached 2,351, reflecting the MFEP’s commitment to fostering a new generation of professionals equipped to advance Algeria’s renewable energy goals.

The growth of Algeria’s photovoltaic sector, driven by both industrial expansion and comprehensive educational and research initiatives, underscores the nation’s strategic focus on renewable energy as a cornerstone of its future energy landscape. With the continued development of infrastructure, human resources, and research capabilities, Algeria is positioning itself as a regional leader in the renewable energy sector, paving the way for a sustainable and energy-secure future.
