Strategic Crops: Significant Foreign Investments on the Horizon

Algiers, Algeria | September 5th, 2024 — Algeria is poised to welcome significant foreign investments in strategic crop cultivation, as part of an ongoing initiative to boost agricultural development in the southern regions. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is currently facilitating these investments through the “Green Corridor,” a program designed to streamline agricultural investment in the southern wilayas. This was announced by Tefiani Wahid, Director of Land Organization and Land Development at the Ministry, during a statement made on Tuesday to the National Radio.

According to Tefiani, the Ministry is in the process of reviewing several major investment projects under the Green Corridor initiative. Some of these projects are already underway and are seeking additional land to complete their objectives. This underscores the strategic importance of the initiative in attracting and supporting large-scale agricultural investments in the country’s less developed southern regions.

In addition to these developments, the Office of Development of Industrial Agriculture in Saharan Lands (ODAS) is set to announce new investment portfolios for economic operators. These portfolios will include newly available perimeters for agricultural development across various southern wilayas. They will also feature lands that had been previously allocated but remained underutilized in earlier investment rounds.

Since the launch of the initiative in 2021, four investment portfolios have been made available to investors via the ODAS digital platform. These portfolios include 54 agricultural perimeters, covering nearly 460,000 hectares across nine southern wilayas. A total of 431 investors have benefited from these allocations, marking a significant step forward in Algeria’s drive to develop its agricultural capacity in these regions.

However, challenges remain. Tefiani emphasized that optimizing the productivity of these agricultural investments is a key priority for the Ministry, especially since many of the allocated lands have not yet commenced production. To address these issues, the Ministry has organized national meetings with investors to discuss the challenges they face, which include water resources, agricultural electricity, and the opening of access roads.

To alleviate these challenges, particularly regarding water resources, a new procedure was introduced following a meeting at the Ministry of Energy and Mines with representatives from the relevant sectors. This procedure includes reducing the spacing between wells from 1,200 meters to between 800 and 600 meters.
