Algiers, Algeria | September 29th, 2024 — A significant milestone in Algeria’s pharmaceutical industry has been reached with the announcement that the first fully domestically produced insulin will be commercially available starting next week. Manufactured by Biocare Biotech under the brand name “Bio Mix,” this locally produced insulin is intended for patients of all ages, from children to the elderly.
The announcement was made by Biocare Biotech’s Director General, Abdelkader Amraoui, during an official ceremony celebrating the launch of the first-ever Algerian-made insulin. Amraoui highlighted that this achievement is the result of extensive research and development by Biocare, supported by the government’s efforts to promote self-sufficiency in pharmaceutical production. He emphasized that this breakthrough represents a significant step towards optimal care for diabetic patients in Algeria.
The insulin will be produced at Biocare’s facility in Oued Smar, Algiers, with distribution set to gradually expand across pharmacies nationwide. The product will be available in two formulations: “Bio Rapid,” designed for rapid blood sugar adjustments, and “Bio Mix,” a combination of fast-acting and long-acting insulin intended to stabilize blood sugar levels overnight.
Looking ahead, Amraoui announced that by the end of the year, Biocare plans to produce more than one million insulin pen boxes to meet local demand. He further revealed the company’s ambitious goal of exporting insulin worth over €250 million by the end of 2025, targeting markets in the Middle East and Africa, including Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Tunisia, and Libya.
Meanwhile, Professor Ammar Tabaybia, head of the internal medicine department at Birtraria Hospital, underscored the growing urgency of addressing diabetes in Algeria, noting that 10.5% of the population aged 20 to 79 suffers from the disease. He also pointed out that many individuals remain unaware of their condition, which can lead to severe health complications affecting the eyes, kidneys, and heart.
This local production of insulin not only marks a major achievement for Algeria’s pharmaceutical sector but also holds the promise of improving the lives of millions of diabetic patients, offering them affordable and accessible treatment options while advancing Algeria’s position in the global pharmaceutical market.
