Algiers, Algeria | October 8th, 2024 — In a compelling address commemorating Algeria’s Diplomatic Day, Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad, Ahmed Attaf, articulated the country’s commitment to enhancing its positive and constructive diplomatic role on the international stage. Under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Algeria aims to reinforce its presence within various regional frameworks, including Arab, African, and Mediterranean spheres.
Attaf highlighted the significance of linking Algeria’s Diplomatic Day with its accession to the United Nations, asserting that this connection is not coincidental but rather a reflection of the unique relationship between Algeria and the UN. He stated, “This relationship was born from the eternal spirit of November, which made the Algerian cause the first decolonization issue to be placed on the agenda of the UN General Assembly. It embodies the contributions of the Algerian revolution in entrenching the right of colonized peoples to self-determination.”
Addressing the current international climate, Attaf expressed the urgent need for a return to a value-based system of principles, especially amid the growing complexities of global relations. He remarked on the decline of multilateral international cooperation, saying, “In the face of this regression, unilateral tendencies have emerged, leading to self-isolation and a dominance of narrow self-interests over broader priorities.”
The minister underscored the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, marking the one-year anniversary of the genocide inflicted upon the Palestinian people. He lamented the international community’s failure to provide justice for this oppressed population, stating, “The overwhelming majority of the sympathetic international community has found no way to address the plight of the downtrodden Palestinian people.” He highlighted the lack of accountability for Israel’s actions, which have consistently violated international norms and committed atrocities against those it occupies.
Attaf reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering commitment to advocating for Palestinian rights, stating, “Algeria will continue to demand meeting after meeting, initiative after initiative, and proposal after proposal, because the Security Council and the General Assembly must fulfill their responsibilities towards the Palestinian people.” This resolute stance reflects Algeria’s historical support for the Palestinian cause and its intent to mobilize global efforts for justice.
Turning to the Sahrawi cause, Attaf noted a significant recent judicial victory for the Sahrawi people, as the highest European judicial authority dismissed decades of attempts to undermine the legitimacy of their struggle. He stated, “The Sahrawi cause remains a decolonization issue, and the Sahrawi people are entitled to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination. The myth of autonomy cannot constitute a legitimate solution, as it contradicts the right to self-determination.”
In a related context, Attaf revealed Algeria’s ongoing endeavors to establish a balanced and beneficial partnership within the Mediterranean neighborhood, particularly with the European Union. He expressed a desire for this partnership to embody the principle of mutual benefit, moving beyond a mere transactional profit-oriented approach. He reiterated Algeria’s intention to engage in a comprehensive review of its partnership agreement with the EU, aiming for a climate of trust and mutual understanding.
