Inspector Djamel Boulkhessaim Highlights Key Role of Fisheries in Ensuring National Food Security

Algiers, Algeria | October 16th, 2024 — In a recent interview on the popular “Morning Guest” program broadcast by Algeria’s national radio, Djamel Boulkhessaim, Inspector at the Ministry of Fisheries and Fishing Products, emphasized the critical role of the fisheries sector in the nation’s drive to achieve food security. He underlined the significant focus that Algeria’s government has placed on fisheries, seeing it as a vital contributor to the country’s food self-sufficiency and economic development.

Boulkhessaim pointed out that several strategic measures have been implemented to foster growth in the sector, including access to high-seas fishing zones and incentives to encourage the expansion of aquaculture activities. These efforts align with the broader government initiative to strengthen food security through the sustainable exploitation of marine resources.

One of the ministry’s key targets is to increase fisheries production to 160,000 tons annually by 2030, an ambitious goal that will help meet growing domestic demand and support Algeria’s wider economic objectives. According to Boulkhessaim, this strategy is driven by a multi-faceted approach that combines technological upgrades, sustainable resource management, and innovation within the sector.

A critical aspect of the ministry’s strategy includes the modernization of fishing fleets. Boulkhessaim stressed the importance of importing state-of-the-art engines for fishing vessels, which will enable greater access to prime fishing zones and enhance overall productivity. This modernization is not only expected to boost the national fish supply but will also contribute to reducing production costs, which could lead to more affordable prices for consumers.

Boulkhessaim also highlighted the significance of remote vessel monitoring systems, a key technological innovation in ensuring the sustainability of Algeria’s fishing industry. These systems, he explained, improve safety standards for fishermen and help safeguard marine resources by enabling more precise tracking of fishing activity. In addition, they assist in creating a detailed map of Algeria’s marine territories, optimizing fishing operations and protecting vulnerable fish populations.

Innovation is at the heart of Algeria’s approach to fisheries development, with the inspector revealing that 82 startups in the sector have already been awarded the “Innovative Project” label. This recognition underscores the country’s commitment to supporting cutting-edge solutions in fisheries and aquaculture, positioning Algeria as a regional leader in sustainable marine production. Boulkhessaim also drew attention to the development of ten new digital applications aimed at enhancing public services within the sector, reflecting the growing role of digitalization in transforming Algeria’s fisheries industry.

These initiatives are part of Algeria’s broader vision to build a resilient and sustainable fisheries sector, one that can meet both the present and future needs of the country.
