Algiers, Algeria | November 06th, 2024 — Algeria, represented by Mr. Kanatri Fouad, Adviser to the Minister of Fisheries and Fishery Products, presided over the 47th session of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM), held at FAO headquarters in Rome. The session convened regional stakeholders to assess cooperative efforts and review reports on activities conducted between 2023 and 2024, highlighting Algeria’s strong commitment to sustainable fisheries management across the Mediterranean.
The meeting opened with a comprehensive evaluation of collaboration progress, followed by key reports from the Scientific Advisory Committee on Fisheries, the Working Group on the Black Sea, and the Scientific Advisory Committee on Aquaculture. The Compliance Committee also presented findings, offering a detailed perspective on the region’s advancements in sustainable fisheries and aquaculture. Central to the discussions was the strategic management of fish stocks and the advancement of responsible aquaculture practices within the Mediterranean and Black Sea, two vital areas for biodiversity and economic resilience.
Additionally, Mr. Kanatri is set to lead the 14th session of the GFCM Committee on Administration and Finance on November 7, 2024. This forthcoming meeting will address the Secretariat’s report on administrative and financial issues and explore critical topics raised by the Black Sea Working Group. Key discussions will focus on the GFCM’s capacity-building framework, promoting a collaborative approach to regional expertise development and adherence to international standards.
Agenda items will also include a review of the GFCM’s budget and member contributions for the 2025–2027 period. Algeria’s role in these leadership efforts underscores its influence in guiding the region’s strategic approach to fisheries management as nations increasingly prioritize sustainability, resource conservation, and cooperative regional action in the face of mounting environmental challenges.
