Algeria Leads the 24th ICCAT Special Session: A Strategic Role in Global Tuna Conservation

Algiers, Algeria | November 12th, 2024 — Algeria has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable fisheries and global conservation efforts by presiding over the 24th Special Session of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT). This event is being held in Limassol, Cyprus, from November 11 to 18, 2024, gathering delegates and experts from across the globe to address the pressing challenges of Atlantic tuna conservation.

At the forefront of Algeria’s participation, Mr. Amar Ouchelli, Deputy Director of Large and Specialized Fisheries at the Ministry of Fisheries and Fishery Products, is chairing Subcommittee 4, a pivotal body within ICCAT tasked with overseeing critical issues surrounding tuna species management and compliance. This esteemed position underscores Algeria’s growing influence in global maritime conservation policy.

The Algerian delegation, a testament to the nation’s expertise in fisheries, includes Mr. Naïm Belakri, Director of Fisheries and Aquaculture for the Wilaya of Skikda, and Mr. Moussa Menad, a researcher at the National Center for Research and Development of Fisheries and Aquaculture. Through this role, Algeria not only elevates its presence on the global stage but also reinforces its commitment to safeguarding marine ecosystems for future generations.
