Algiers, Algeria | November 17th, 2024 — The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad announced the successful recovery of 58 state-owned properties located abroad, with a significant majority concentrated in France. This initiative, executed in line with directives from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, underscores Algeria’s unwavering commitment to restoring, preserving, and strategically utilizing its national assets to serve the country’s broader interests.
In a formal response to a parliamentary query posed by MP Abdelwahab Yaakoubi (Question No. 2156), the ministry detailed the scope and value of the reclaimed properties, revealing their strategic distribution: 38 located in France and the remaining 20 spread across various countries worldwide. The properties had long been underutilized or neglected, prompting a decisive governmental response to reassert control and optimize their use for national benefit.
Comprehensive Evaluation and Strategic Utilization
Algerian authorities, in collaboration with specialized real estate agencies, have initiated the revaluation of these properties to determine their current market worth, particularly in light of fluctuations in global real estate markets triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the complexities involved, including high operational costs, such as security, insurance, and utility payments, Algeria has embarked on a strategic plan tailored to each asset’s condition and potential.
Some properties, deemed structurally unsound or economically unviable, have been slated for sale. Meanwhile, others have been allocated to national institutions and associations operating abroad to bolster Algeria’s international footprint and serve the Algerian diaspora.
Strengthening Cultural and National Identity
Several reclaimed properties have been repurposed to host cultural, charitable, religious, and educational organizations catering to Algeria’s expatriate community. These efforts aim to reinforce the cultural and national identity of Algerians residing abroad while fostering deeper ties with their homeland. In parallel, the government is exploring the establishment of new cultural centers abroad to facilitate educational and cultural exchanges, thereby nurturing Algeria’s global influence and heritage.
Streamlined Oversight and Inter-Ministerial Coordination
The National Committee for Real Estate Operations Abroad, comprising representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Defense, and Ministry of Finance, has been tasked with overseeing these efforts. This high-level committee ensures the effective management of state-owned properties and their transformation into strategic assets that contribute to Algeria’s economic and diplomatic objectives.
