Restoring Confidence and Upholding Justice: President Tebboune Highlights Algeria’s Judicial Renaissance

Algiers, Algeria | November 25th, 2024 — In an address during the opening ceremony of the 2024–2025 judicial year, held at the Supreme Court in Algiers, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune declared the restoration of confidence between Algerian citizens and the state. Speaking as President of the High Council of the Judiciary (CSM), Tebboune underscored the pivotal reforms shaping a modern, independent judiciary, firmly grounded in republican values and public trust.

“Algeria has accomplished the construction of a republican judicial system fortified by the confidence of its people,” President Tebboune asserted, highlighting the transformative changes introduced under his leadership. These reforms, he emphasized, are designed to protect the national economy and safeguard the nation against the remnants of corruption that once plagued its governance.

Judicial Independence and Legislative Reforms

President Tebboune pointed to the consolidation of judicial independence as a cornerstone of Algeria’s progress. The enactment of the 2020 Constitution, which strengthened the judiciary’s role and autonomy, has marked a significant shift in the nation’s governance.

Recalling the dark chapters of Algeria’s past, Tebboune lamented how the practices of the former regime undermined honest officials and poisoned the professional environment. “Not long ago, the ‘issaba’ [clique or the gang] and its networks wreaked havoc on the lives of the nation’s honest officials and managers,” he stated. However, he reassured the audience that the new constitutional provisions and legislative reforms have fortified justice, allowing it to operate independently and in line with the rule of law.

“The new legislative texts reflect my commitments to the people,” Tebboune emphasized. “They aim to moralize public life and wage an unrelenting fight against corruption and malpractice.”

Strengthening Institutions and Supporting Magistrates

The President hailed the strength and integrity of Algeria’s institutions, which he described as “pillars of the Republic, built on the dedication and loyalty of their personnel.” Acknowledging the vital role of magistrates, Tebboune assured them of his unwavering support. “We will address all social, personal, and familial challenges faced by magistrates, enabling them to fulfill their noble mission with excellence,” he promised.

Modernization and Digital Transformation

Central to the judicial reforms is the modernization and digitalization of the justice sector. Tebboune expressed satisfaction with the significant strides made in abandoning outdated bureaucratic methods, replacing them with innovative practices that enhance efficiency and transparency.

“Our efforts in modernization and digital transformation have enabled the judiciary to surpass old methods,” he remarked. “We are confident that future advancements will further enhance the sector’s performance.”

The President emphasized that these reforms align with Algeria’s broader commitment to good governance, ensuring the justice system meets the expectations of its citizens.

International Advocacy: Justice for Palestine

In a powerful conclusion, President Tebboune highlighted Algeria’s success in mobilizing global support for Palestinian justice. He recalled his call, made during last year’s judicial year opening, urging the international community to bring the perpetrators of crimes against Palestinians to justice.

This call, he noted, has been heeded. The International Criminal Court (ICC) recently issued arrest warrants against two officials from the Zionist entity for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Gaza. “The appeal of Algeria has resonated with the honorable men and women of the world,” Tebboune declared, extending his gratitude to nations like South Africa for their solidarity.

President Tebboune’s address reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering commitment to fostering an independent, efficient, and transparent judicial system. With reforms rooted in republican values, a modernized justice sector, and a strong stance on international advocacy, Algeria stands as a beacon of justice and good governance.
