Algiers, Algeria | November 25th, 2024 —  In a momentous ceremony held in The Hague, attended by key officials from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), the Mayor of The Hague, and diplomatic representatives from various countries, the 2024 OPCW Hague Award was officially presented to Algeria’s National Institute of Forensic Evidence and Criminal Sciences of the National Gendarmerie. The prestigious accolade was awarded in recognition of the institute’s unwavering dedication and exceptional contributions toward advancing the mission of the OPCW: a world free from chemical weapons.

This significant recognition highlights the vital role played by the Algerian institute in supporting the global fight against the use of chemical weapons. As the only African laboratory designated by the OPCW, the institute has consistently demonstrated its commitment to upholding international standards in forensic science and chemical analysis. Its work aligns with the OPCW’s objectives to prevent the proliferation of chemical weapons and ensure rigorous monitoring, verification, and compliance across the globe.

The award ceremony, a symbol of international collaboration, underscored the importance of scientific integrity, technical expertise, and global partnerships in the collective effort to eliminate chemical weapons. Through its dedication, the Algerian institute has firmly established itself as a key player in the fight for global peace and security, further strengthening Algeria’s significant contributions to global disarmament efforts.

The recognition also marks a pivotal moment for Africa, with the Algerian laboratory standing as a beacon of excellence within the continent. As the sole African institution entrusted by the OPCW, its leadership in this field offers a model of cooperation and commitment that other nations can aspire to emulate.

In receiving this distinguished honor, the National Institute of Forensic Evidence and Criminal Sciences has not only demonstrated its technical prowess but also highlighted Algeria’s firm stance in supporting global initiatives aimed at creating a safer, chemical weapons-free world for future generations.
