Algiers, Algeria | December 6th, 2024 — In a historic address to the Algerian Parliament, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa emphasized Algeria’s pivotal role as a strategic partner and a gateway to the African continent. Speaking at the Palace of Nations during an extraordinary joint session of both parliamentary chambers, Ramaphosa’s speech underscored the deep historical and political ties between the two nations, while charting a vision for a united and prosperous Africa.

“It is a profound honor to stand before this distinguished assembly and to address a nation that shares with South Africa a legacy of struggle, resistance, and unwavering commitment to liberation,” Ramaphosa declared, paying tribute to Algeria’s storied contributions to African freedom movements, including its steadfast support during South Africa’s battle against apartheid.

Algeria: A Strategic Ally and African Beacon
Describing Algeria as “a strategic country and a gateway to Africa,” Ramaphosa highlighted the shared experiences of colonial oppression that bind the two nations. He lauded Algeria’s historical sacrifices and contributions to the liberation of African nations, calling it a source of inspiration for the continent’s ongoing pursuit of justice and independence.

“We carry the torch of freedom, and this torch must illuminate the path to development, unity, and a brighter future for the coming generations,” he affirmed, pledging to strengthen Algeria-South Africa collaboration in addressing global and regional challenges.

A Call for Unity and Self-Determination
Ramaphosa reaffirmed the two nations’ commitment to supporting colonized peoples, with particular emphasis on the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination. He called on the international community to uphold the principles of decolonization enshrined in international charters, urging collective efforts to ensure justice for the people of Western Sahara.

“We must remind the world of its obligation to uphold the rights of oppressed nations and fulfill the promises of liberation,” he stated.

Advocating for Global Reform and Economic Integration
The South African leader commended Algeria’s principled stance in the United Nations Security Council during its non-permanent membership, calling for reform of the global body to better represent the interests of all nations, particularly those in the Global South.

As the newly appointed Chair of the G20, Ramaphosa also championed the integration of African nations into the global economic framework. He urged greater unity among African states to achieve sustainable economic growth, noting Algeria and South Africa’s shared responsibility in leading the continent toward prosperity.

A Historic Partnership Renewed
The joint parliamentary session marked a significant moment in the enduring partnership between Algeria and South Africa, both of which have historically stood at the forefront of African liberation and unity. Ramaphosa’s address, rooted in mutual respect and shared aspirations, reiterated the importance of collaboration in overcoming contemporary challenges and ensuring the continent’s advancement on the global stage.

Ramaphosa concluded his speech with a call to action: “Together, we must light the way for a united Africa that is economically resilient, politically independent, and a beacon of hope for generations to come.”
