The newly discovered cave, reaching an astonishing 200 meters underground, marks a historic milestone in Algeria’s geological exploration and opens new frontiers for scientific research.
Algiers, Algeria | February 23rd, 2025 — Algeria has once again asserted its prominence in geological and scientific exploration with the groundbreaking discovery of a new cave in Mount Debagh, located in the Roknia municipality of Guelma province. This remarkable find, achieved by the Cave Exploration Association of Béjaïa, represents an unprecedented advancement in North African speleology, as the cave features an extraordinary vertical descent of approximately 200 meters—making it the deepest of its kind in the entire region.
The discovery, hailed as a historic moment in Algerian geographical studies, underscores the nation’s untapped natural wonders and vast subterranean landscapes. Mount Debagh, a site already known for its rich karst formations, has now unveiled an even more enigmatic geological marvel. The cave’s depth and structural complexity are expected to attract geologists, speleologists, and environmental researchers eager to investigate its underground ecosystem, geological composition, and potential historical significance.
Preliminary surveys conducted by the Béjaïa-based exploration team suggest that the cave possesses unique geological formations, possibly dating back millions of years. Experts believe that its intricate network of tunnels and vertical chambers could provide invaluable insights into the region’s geological history, subterranean biodiversity, and hydrological systems.
The association’s president lauded the achievement, emphasizing that such a discovery not only enriches Algeria’s scientific and natural heritage but also sets the stage for further exploration of the country’s hidden geological treasures. “This is an extraordinary breakthrough that places Algeria at the forefront of speleological research in North Africa. It paves the way for in-depth scientific studies and potential international collaborations in geology and cave science,” he stated.
Beyond its scientific significance, the newfound cave holds potential for ecotourism and adventure exploration, positioning Guelma as a key destination for researchers and explorers worldwide.
