Boughali Calls for Intensified Efforts to Support Palestine, Strengthen Arab Parliamentary Action in Cairo

At the 37th extraordinary session of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union, Algerian People’s National Assembly Speaker Brahim Boughali urges unified Arab action to defend Palestinian rights and confront regional challenges.

Algiers, Algeria | February 23rd, 2025 — The 37th extraordinary session of the Executive Committee of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (AIPU) convened on Sunday in Cairo, Egypt, under the chairmanship of Brahim Boughali, Speaker of Algeria’s People’s National Assembly and President of the AIPU. The session, held at a critical juncture for the Arab world, aimed to reinforce parliamentary cooperation and mobilize concerted efforts in support of Palestine.

According to an official statement from the Assembly, Boughali opened the meeting by inviting participants to recite Al-Fatiha in tribute to the martyrs of the ongoing Zionist aggression on Gaza and other occupied Palestinian territories, as well as the victims of the crises in Syria and Lebanon.

In his address, Boughali underscored the pressing significance of this session, praising Egypt’s vital role in hosting the meeting and its continued commitment to Arab causes. He also commended the AIPU Secretariat for its diligence in implementing resolutions and fostering stronger inter-parliamentary cooperation across the Arab world.

Highlighting the grave circumstances facing the region, Boughali stressed the imperative of unifying Arab ranks and reinforcing the role of parliaments as a powerful mechanism for advancing collective Arab interests. “The responsibility upon us is immense,” he declared, emphasizing that the Palestinian cause remains “the core issue in the region’s conflict.”

Boughali warned against the escalating threats to Palestinian rights, particularly attempts to undermine the right of return and alter the legal status of Al-Quds Al-Sharif. “This phase demands intensified efforts to counter schemes aimed at liquidating the historical rights of the Palestinian people,” he asserted. He urged Arab parliaments to amplify their advocacy for Palestine, expose Zionist violations on international platforms, and ensure legal protection for Al-Quds as the capital of the State of Palestine.

A key focus of the session was the activation of the Arab Parliamentary Action Document to Support Palestinian Resilience, adopted at the seventh joint conference between the Arab Parliament and the AIPU. Boughali stressed the need to implement its provisions effectively to bolster Palestinian steadfastness amid ongoing Israeli aggression.

Looking ahead, Boughali called for meticulous preparation for the 150th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), set to take place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in April 2025. He emphasized the urgency of introducing an emergency item that would reflect a unified Arab stance on Palestine, while rallying support from African, Asian, and Latin American parliaments to counter Israeli lobbying efforts.

Beyond the Palestinian issue, Boughali also addressed the Syrian crisis, underscoring the necessity of an inclusive political resolution that safeguards Syria’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. He reiterated the importance of ensuring the safe and dignified return of displaced Syrians, free from foreign interference.

In conclusion, Boughali reaffirmed Algeria’s unwavering commitment to advancing Arab parliamentary diplomacy and reinforcing its role in tackling regional and global challenges. He urged Arab parliaments to uphold their moral and political responsibilities, declaring, “History will not forgive those who falter.” Stressing the need for unwavering advocacy for Palestine, he reaffirmed Algeria’s dedication, as AIPU chair, to consolidating Arab parliamentary action in service of the nation’s shared aspirations.
