Authorities Expel Suspected Extremist After Years of Surveillance and Legal Proceedings

Algiers, Algeria | February 24th, 2025 — Spain has deported a 53-year-old Moroccan citizen, formerly working as a barber in Barcelona, over accusations of recruiting fighters for the notorious terrorist organization ISIS. The decision, finalized by Spanish authorities, underscores a broader crackdown on radicalization networks operating within the country.

According to a statement released by Spain’s National Police, as reported by Europa Press, the investigation into the suspect’s activities dates back to 2015, following an intelligence request from Rabat. Spanish security services identified the individual as a key operative in extremist recruitment, maintaining direct connections with terrorist cells.

The Moroccan national was apprehended alongside another suspect in 2018 by Spain’s Civil Guard for their involvement in a jihadist cell based in Catalonia. Authorities revealed that he exploited his barbershop as a front for radicalization efforts, targeting vulnerable individuals for recruitment into ISIS. His case took a critical turn in late 2019 when Spanish authorities initiated disciplinary proceedings against him, citing activities deemed a direct threat to national security.

Despite these grave suspicions, the suspect was released on bail in 2022, albeit under close surveillance. However, further intelligence gathering revealed his continued engagement with radical elements, reinforcing the decision to remove him from Spanish territory. The deportation process accelerated after authorities discovered that his brother-in-law had traveled to Syria to fight alongside ISIS before being killed in combat.

Deemed a “genuine security threat” by Spanish authorities, the suspect was detained and subsequently transferred to Madrid, where he was placed on a direct flight to Casablanca’s Mohammed V International Airport in mid-February. As part of the deportation order, he has been banned from entering the Schengen Area for a period of ten years, effectively barring his return to European soil.
