Ministers of Communication and Sports Emphasize the Vital Role of Sports Journalism in National Development
Algiers, Algeria | February 24th, 2025 — The Algerian Sports Journalists’ Organization held a ceremony on Monday to honor a select group of distinguished journalists and photographers who have made significant contributions to sports media. The event, which celebrated excellence in sports journalism, was attended by Minister of Communication Mohamed Mziane and Minister of Youth and Sports Walid Sadi.
As part of the ceremony, the two ministers participated in an open forum discussing the state of sports journalism in Algeria and its critical role in shaping public perception and fostering a deeper engagement with national and international sporting events. Minister Sadi underscored the pressing need to modernize Algeria’s sports media landscape, emphasizing the necessity of improved coverage and professional development in the field. He specifically highlighted handball as a discipline receiving special attention from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, following a noticeable decline in its performance in recent years.
Addressing Algeria’s upcoming participation in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Minister Sadi reassured attendees that media coverage would follow established protocols in coordination with the Confederation of African Football (CAF). He expressed optimism about Algeria’s chances in the tournament, stating that efforts would be made to secure the continental title on Moroccan soil.
In a gesture of appreciation, the Algerian Sports Journalists’ Organization also honored both ministers, presenting them with commemorative awards as a token of recognition for their support and contributions to the sector. The awards were handed over by the organization’s chairman, Youcef Tazir.
The event concluded with an engaging discussion, as journalists were given the opportunity to raise pressing concerns and ask direct questions to the ministers. Both officials addressed various challenges facing sports journalism, reaffirming their commitment to fostering a more dynamic and transparent media environment.
This initiative highlights the growing acknowledgment of sports journalism as a cornerstone of Algeria’s sports ecosystem, reinforcing the government’s commitment to strengthening media coverage and enhancing the role of journalists in national sports development.
