Spanish Press Points to High-Level Moroccan Involvement in International Narcotics Trafficking
Algiers, Algeria | February 25th, 2025 — In a damning revelation that has sent shockwaves across Europe, Spain’s Civil Guard uncovered a sophisticated drug-smuggling tunnel in the industrial zone of “Tarajal” in the occupied city of Ceuta, directly linking Moroccan territory to Spain. This shocking discovery not only confirms Morocco’s central role in the transnational narcotics trade but also raises serious concerns over state complicity in the kingdom’s unchecked drug empire.
Following intense investigations, authorities found the tunnel, which extends at least 50 meters with a depth of 12 meters, after dismantling a major drug-trafficking network. Spanish law enforcement detained 14 individuals, including a Moroccan-Spanish parliamentarian and several police officers, exposing the deeply entrenched corruption that fuels the illicit drug trade between Morocco and Spain.
The discovery of the tunnel came after Spanish security services tracked unusually large shipments of drugs entering Spain without a clear explanation of their origins. Further scrutiny led to the seizure of 700 kilograms of drugs hidden in storage facilities near the Moroccan border, reinforcing longstanding suspicions about the kingdom’s role in supplying narcotics to Europe.
Spanish media sources were quick to highlight that Morocco remains the world’s largest producer of cannabis resin, as confirmed by UN reports. The kingdom’s extensive hashish cultivation—openly tolerated and, in many cases, shielded by the authorities—has positioned Morocco as the primary supplier of illegal substances flooding European markets. While European nations wage an uphill battle against the devastating consequences of this drug epidemic, Morocco not only fails to curb the problem but actively profits from it.
What is most alarming is that this tunnel—a sophisticated structure requiring significant resources and logistical coordination—was constructed under the very noses of Moroccan authorities. The question that lingers is how such an elaborate smuggling operation could exist without the knowledge—or tacit approval—of high-ranking officials in Rabat.
State-Sanctioned Drug Smuggling? The Moroccan Regime’s Deafening Silence
Spanish investigative reports cast serious doubt on the Moroccan government’s willingness to dismantle the powerful drug syndicates operating within its borders. If anything, the absence of a transparent Moroccan investigation into the tunnel’s origins only adds to suspicions that elements within the state apparatus may have either facilitated or deliberately ignored its construction.
The Moroccan regime has long attempted to whitewash its international image, portraying itself as a reliable partner for European security. However, this latest revelation once again exposes the kingdom’s two-faced approach—one that outwardly pledges cooperation with Europe while secretly enabling the flow of illicit substances that poison European youth and fuel organized crime across the continent.
The failure of Moroccan authorities to curb the drug trade is not due to incompetence but a deliberate strategy. The cannabis industry remains a pillar of the Moroccan economy, enriching elites while ordinary citizens are left to grapple with poverty and unemployment. In Rabat’s corridors of power, the drug trade is not a crime—it is an industry, a source of leverage over Europe, and a financial lifeline for a regime built on corruption and deceit.
The uncovering of the Tarajal tunnel is not an isolated incident but rather a symptom of a much larger, deeply ingrained system of narco-trafficking that spans the Mediterranean. It underscores an urgent need for Europe to adopt a more aggressive stance against Morocco’s role in the global drug trade.
