Strategic Cooperation Expands as Algeria Positions Itself as a Key Player in the Global Energy Sector

Algiers, Algeria | February 25th, 2025 — In a move underscoring the deep-rooted strategic partnership between Algeria and China, Minister of State, Minister of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Arkab, welcomed a high-ranking delegation from China’s Sinopec at the ministry’s headquarters on Tuesday, February 25, 2025. The delegation, led by Sinopec’s First Vice President, Niu Shuanwen, was received in the presence of Sonatrach’s CEO, Rachid Hachichi, along with senior executives from the ministry.

 

The meeting served as a platform to reaffirm the enduring cooperation between Sonatrach and Sinopec, emphasizing its strategic significance and vast potential for expansion. Discussions delved into existing collaborations, investment opportunities, and the prospects of reinforcing Sinopec’s footprint in Algeria’s energy sector, particularly in hydrocarbon exploration, production, and refining.

Minister Arkab highlighted the imperative of broadening the scope of Algeria-China energy cooperation beyond traditional oil and gas activities to include advanced petrochemical industries and renewable energy ventures. He underlined Algeria’s commitment to fostering a business-friendly environment through its reformed legal framework governing hydrocarbons and foreign investments, presenting major opportunities for international partners such as Sinopec.

“Algeria and China share a long history of robust and mutually beneficial cooperation, and our energy partnership stands as a testament to this enduring alliance. The new investment climate in Algeria opens unprecedented prospects for global energy giants, and we welcome Sinopec’s increased involvement in our sector,” stated Minister Arkab.

For his part, Niu Shuanwen, First Vice President of Sinopec, expressed his deep appreciation for the strong ties uniting Algeria and China, hailing Sonatrach as a trusted partner in advancing joint energy ventures. He reaffirmed Sinopec’s commitment to expanding its presence in Algeria and capitalizing on the country’s abundant energy potential.
