High-Level Talks to Advance the Pivotal Tindouf-Zouerate Road Project and Strengthen Trade Relations
Algiers, Algeria | February 26th, 2025 — The Minister of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure, Lakhdar Rekhroukh, will undertake a two-day working visit to Mauritania starting Wednesday, as part of Algeria’s unwavering commitment to enhancing regional connectivity and economic cooperation. This visit, underscoring the strategic depth of Algerian-Mauritanian relations, is expected to catalyze significant progress in the execution of the ambitious Tindouf-Zouerate road project.
According to an official communiqué from the Ministry, Minister Rekhroukh will co-chair, alongside his Mauritanian counterpart, Minister of Equipment and Transport Ely Ould El Veirik, the opening session of the second joint Algerian-Mauritanian commission for monitoring the implementation of the Tindouf-Zouerate road. This key infrastructure project represents a monumental step in the consolidation of Algeria’s economic footprint in West Africa and its broader vision of transcontinental trade expansion.
The strategic significance of this initiative was reaffirmed on February 10, when President Abdelmadjid Tebboune convened a high-level meeting dedicated to assessing the progress of the Tindouf-Zouerate road and exploring new avenues for enhancing commercial exchanges between Algeria and Mauritania.
The agreement for the construction of the 840-kilometer road was signed in December 2021 during the state visit of Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani to Algeria, at the invitation of President Tebboune. This critical infrastructure, executed by ten Algerian companies under the oversight of an Algerian engineering firm, is poised to transform regional mobility and economic integration.
Upon completion, Algeria will manage the operational phase of the project through a concession agreement spanning ten years, with automatic renewal clauses. Additionally, Naftal, Algeria’s leading petroleum distribution company, will oversee the establishment and operation of service stations along the route, ensuring seamless logistical support for transporters and travelers alike.
The Tindouf-Zouerate corridor is expected to unlock new international trade routes, facilitating the entry of Algerian businesses into the African market via Mauritania. This will not only boost economic cooperation between Algerian and Mauritanian stakeholders but also invigorate regional economic activity and streamline cross-border trade.
Strengthening Economic Ties and Expanding Algerian Influence
Over recent years, Algeria and Mauritania have significantly deepened their economic engagement, marked by key milestones such as the inauguration of two border crossings, the establishment of the Algerian Union Bank (AUB) in Nouakchott, and the launch of a permanent exhibition of Algerian products in the Mauritanian capital. These initiatives reflect Algeria’s resolute drive to consolidate its position as a key economic player in the region.
The upward trajectory of bilateral trade underscores the effectiveness of these strategic efforts. On February 18, Minister of Foreign Trade and Export Promotion Mohamed Boukhari disclosed that trade exchanges between Algeria and Mauritania had surged to an impressive $135 million within the first seven months of 2024, highlighting the growing dynamism of economic cooperation between the two nations.
