Algiers, Algeria | February 27th, 2025 — In a resounding diplomatic setback for Morocco, the Mexican Parliament abruptly canceled an official reception for the Speaker of the Moroccan Parliament, following an outcry from lawmakers who denounced Morocco’s continued illegal occupation of Western Sahara.
During the session, members of the Mexican legislative body forcefully opposed the presence of the Moroccan official, demanding an immediate suspension of proceedings until his departure from the premises. The rejection, spearheaded by members of the Labor Party (PT), signaled Mexico’s firm and unwavering stance in support of the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.
Speaking on behalf of the Labor Party, Deputy Margarita García delivered a scathing rebuke, declaring that Morocco’s representative was “unwelcome” and accusing the North African kingdom of perpetrating crimes tantamount to genocide against the Sahrawi population. García, who also presides over the Mexico-Sahrawi Friendship Group, condemned Rabat’s systematic human rights violations in the occupied territories, describing Morocco’s foreign policy as one fundamentally rooted in bribery and coercion.
“The Kingdom of Morocco’s policy revolves around the corruption of parliamentarians,” García asserted before the legislative chamber, exposing Rabat’s aggressive campaign of financial incentives and paid trips aimed at swaying political figures, particularly within Latin America.
Despite Morocco’s concerted efforts to buy political influence, its attempts were met with outright rejection from the highest legislative institution in Mexico. In a powerful display of solidarity with the Sahrawi cause, lawmakers unfurled banners emblazoned with pro-Sahrawi slogans such as “Long Live the Sahrawi Republic” and “Freedom for the Sahrawi People.” Several parliamentarians further amplified their opposition by jeering and vocally protesting the presence of the Moroccan delegation.
The diplomatic snub comes amid growing international condemnation of Morocco’s ongoing occupation of Western Sahara. In a related development, the Speaker of the Mexican Parliament, during a recent parliamentary summit in Honduras, publicly denounced Morocco’s unlawful occupation and reaffirmed his country’s commitment to respecting the sovereignty of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR). His remarks further solidify Mexico’s principled position in standing against colonialism and supporting the Sahrawi people’s right to independence.
