The Algerian Communication Minister Calls for Rigorous Training and Ethical Responsibility in Media Practice
Algiers, Algeria | February 27th, 2025 — Algerian Minister of Communication, Mohamed Meziane, underscored the imperative need for journalists to uphold objectivity and refine their practical skills to fulfill their professional and societal responsibilities. Addressing the opening of a specialized training session in Algiers on Thursday, Meziane emphasized that media professionals must not only inform but also cultivate public awareness through responsible and skillful journalism.
The training program, designed for journalists from various national media outlets, is centered on enhancing communication techniques within journalistic practice. Conducted in English over six weeks, the initiative falls within the ministry’s broader strategy to elevate media professionalism as part of the Government’s Action Plan for institutional communication development.
Journalists as Opinion Leaders: A Call for Responsibility
Highlighting the pivotal role of journalists as “opinion leaders,” Meziane reminded attendees that the core mission of journalism is to enlighten society. He stressed that media—especially the audiovisual sector—holds significant potential to enrich public discourse, elevate civic awareness, and provide citizens with credible, fact-based information.
The minister also reiterated the necessity of continuous training as a fundamental pillar for strengthening both journalists and media institutions. He emphasized that improving media performance involves a multidimensional approach, encompassing political, institutional, and economic aspects. From a political perspective, he underscored the media’s role in supporting major national programs and government initiatives. On the economic front, he acknowledged that, in certain cases, media organizations require state support to maintain sustainability and enhance their capabilities.
Meziane’s address also focused on the critical need to invest in human capital within the media sector. He called for the systematic implementation of ongoing training programs to ensure that journalists remain at the forefront of global media standards and evolving communication technologies.
The minister reaffirmed that the government remains committed to fostering a professional and independent media landscape that upholds the highest ethical standards. Through structured training initiatives and institutional support, the Ministry of Communication aims to equip Algerian journalists with the necessary tools to navigate the complexities of modern journalism while adhering to the principles of integrity, objectivity, and accuracy.
