ALGIERS- The headquarters of the Chlef wilaya committee of the Algerian Red Crescent (CRA) was baptized, on Sunday, bearing name of “Abdelmadjid Merouani”, in recognition of the sacrifice made by this “martyr of volunteerism”, who died on April 2 after being fatally hit on the East-West Highway as he served Iftar (breaking the fast) food to passers-by.
The naming ceremony was presided over by the president of the Algerian Red Crescent (CRA), Ibtissam Hamlaoui, in the presence of the president of the Higher Youth Council (CSJ), Mustapha Hidaoui, the wali of Chlef, Atallah Moulati and members of the CRA committee of the wilaya.
The baptism of the headquarters of the wilaya committee in the name of “Abdelmadjid Merouani” is a sign of “recognition and gratitude for the dedication and great sacrifice made by this ambassador of humanitarian action during the holy month”, said Mrs. Hamlaoui in a statement to the press.
“The CRA, which is the oldest humanitarian organization in Algeria (1956), lost some of its members during the war of liberation and many others during relief operations in Algeria and around the world,” noted Ms. Hamlaoui, emphasizing that the volunteers of this organization “fulfil their duty throughout the country by offering the highest expressions of solidarity and volunteerism”.
For his part, the president of the Higher Youth Council affirmed that “the late Merouani joined the school of the Algerian Red Crescent because he believed in the value of volunteering. He gave his life in the name of social cohesion and solidarity and will remain immortal in the memory of Algeria, as he reinforced the values of volunteerism, citizenship and solidarity,” said Mr. Hidaoui.
The President of the Algerian Red Crescent and the President of the High Council of Youth paid a visit to the home of the late Abdelmadjid Merouani, located in the district of Sonelgaz in the commune of Oued Sly (West), to present their condolences to the family’s members. They also presented a certificate of appreciation to his family and offered Umrah to his parents.
