A New Chapter in Cooperation: Hungarian Ambassador Szarka Reaffirms Historic Ties with Algeria

Algiers, Algeria | October 9th, 2024 — In a reaffirmation of the long-standing and historic friendship between Algeria and Hungary, newly appointed Hungarian Ambassador, Gabor Levente Szarka, emphasized on Tuesday the enduring ties between the two nations, while underscoring the significant opportunities for further cooperation in a wide range of fields.

During a formal ceremony at the Presidential Palace, where Ambassador Szarka presented his letters of credence to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, he highlighted the pivotal role Hungary played in recognizing Algeria’s independence in 1962. He noted that Hungary was among the first countries to extend diplomatic recognition to Algeria, marking the beginning of a strong and fruitful partnership. This historical context, the ambassador stressed, laid the foundation for the enduring friendship that continues to unite the two nations today.

“Hungary and Algeria share a unique bond, a relationship built on the principles of mutual respect and solidarity,” stated Ambassador Szarka. “Our cooperation, which began in 1962, has only grown stronger over the decades, and I am committed to fostering even deeper ties between our countries during my tenure in Algeria.”

Ambassador Szarka’s remarks came in the wake of President Tebboune’s successful re-election for a second term, for which the diplomat extended his heartfelt congratulations. Expressing optimism about the future, the ambassador pledged to work towards bolstering bilateral relations in areas such as trade, energy, education, and cultural exchanges, with a clear focus on creating tangible partnerships that would benefit both nations.

The ambassador’s statement reflects a shared vision for stronger bilateral ties in a range of sectors. Hungary and Algeria have the potential to collaborate on energy initiatives, given Algeria’s significant role as an energy supplier, as well as to expand educational and cultural exchanges that would enrich both societies.

The audience took place in the presence of senior Algerian officials, including Mr. Boualem Boualem, the Director of Cabinet at the Presidency of the Republic, and Mr. Ahmed Attaf, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad.
