A Special Honor: President Droupadi Murmu Receives Honorary Doctorate from Sidi Abdellah Science & Technology Hub, University of Algiers 3

Algiers, Algeria | October 15th, 2024 — In a prestigious recognition of her role as a global leader and the strengthening ties between India and Algeria, President Droupadi Murmu was conferred an Honorary Doctorate by the Sidi Abdellah Science & Technology Hub at the University of Algiers 3. The accolade reflects both the respect Algeria holds for the Indian President and the deeper connection forged between the two nations in areas of education, technology, and international cooperation.

Upon receiving the Honorary Doctorate, President Murmu expressed her deep gratitude, stating, “It is, indeed, a humbling experience for me to be honoured with the Honorary Doctorate. This is an honour for my country more than for me as an individual.” She further emphasized the importance of shared learning and the opportunities that exist for Algerian students through India’s vast educational resources.

During her speech, President Murmu pointed to the success of alumni from the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) program, highlighting their influential roles across various countries, including Algeria. “It is a matter of pride for us that ITEC Alumni have carved a niche for themselves in their respective countries. Many of them have become Ministers, senior diplomats, government officials, and leading entrepreneurs.” This program, a vital part of India’s outreach, has enabled thousands of students and professionals from across Africa and beyond to access world-class education and training.

In her address, Murmu encouraged the Government of Algeria to seize the unique educational opportunities India offers. She underscored how Indian institutions provide high-quality education at a fraction of the cost compared to Western counterparts, making it an attractive option for African students, including those from Algeria.

“India provides quality education at a fraction of the cost of western institutions to an ever-increasing number of students from Africa, including from Algeria. We also offer several scholarships and fellowships to African students,” she said, inviting Algerian educational institutions, government departments, and the nation’s youth to take full advantage of these opportunities.

Murmu’s remarks highlighted India’s rapid technological and economic growth, which has been driven by innovation and women’s increasing participation in the workforce. “A key pillar of India’s rapid economic recovery is technology-led and women-led growth. The massive digital transformation taking place in India, never seen anywhere on the world stage, has encouraged the participation of women in the workforce,” she explained.

As Algeria continues to expand its own technological and educational capacities, President Murmu’s call to action for greater collaboration between the two nations in these fields is timely and pivotal. She noted the significant role that academic institutions, like the University of Algiers 3, play in shaping future leaders, scientists, and innovators.

“It is always a pleasure to address young minds in universities brimming with confidence, dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge that directly impacts national development missions,” President Murmu concluded, emphasizing the vital link between education and national progress.
